Westworld to Be Pulled From HBO Max

News, Westworld

The Emmy Award-winning series Westworld, based on the 1973 film written by Michael Crichton, is set to be pulled from HBO Max.

Deadline exclusively reported the news and shared that Westworld‘s four-season run is “likely to resurface on other company platforms.”

The sci-fi show debuted its fourth and now final eight-episode season in June. It starred Evan Rachel Wood, Thandiwe Newton, Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Luke Hemsworth, Aaron Paul, and Angela Sarafyan.

Ariana DeBose joined Westworld Season 4 as a recurring guest star.

TV Line reported that Westworld‘s cancelation by HBO came “nearly 12 weeks following the airing of Season 4’s finale.”

At the time of its cancelation, TV Line shared that HBO released a statement. “Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-bending odyssey, raising the bar at every step,” HBO stated.

“We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers, and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. Television. It’s been a thrill to join them on this journey,” HBO added.

Kilter Films, from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, also issued a statement about the show’s cancelation.

“Making Westworld has been one of the highlights of our careers. We are deeply grateful to our extraordinary cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and brilliant worlds,” it read.

“We’ve been privileged to tell these stories about the future of consciousness — both human and beyond — in the brief window of time before our AI overlords forbid us from doing so,” the statement concluded.

During its run, the sci-fi drama acquired 53 Primetime Emmy nominations and eight wins, including Thandie Newton winning Oustanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Maeve at the 70th Annual Emmy® Awards in 2018.

The news about Westworld‘s removal from HBO Max comes after a long list of similar announcements from HBO and the streaming service.

HBO’s The Nevers cancelation was announced simultaneously with the Westworld development.

HBO Max’s first original scripted series, Love Life, was also canceled today, with plans to remove both of its seasons from the streaming service.

Also, Minx was canceled by HBO Max after its previous report of a Season 2 renewal in May 2022.

So, with this news about Westworld, it joins a growing list of shake-ups at HBO and HBO Max.

Variety reports, “The removal of shows from HBO Max means WB Discovery is able to save money in residuals paid to cast and crews of productions, on top of the money saved by not continuing with the shows at all.”

Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who also served as executive producers, created Westworld for television with Alison Schapker, Denise Thé, J.J. Abrams, Athena Wickham, Richard J. Lewis, and Ben Stephenson. Kilter Films and Bad Robot Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television, produced Westworld.
