Emmys 2018: ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,’ ‘American Crime Story,’ & Other Big Wins
The 70th Annual Emmy® Awards began with a skit commenting on the lack of diversity in Hollywood. While there is still a steep hill to climb, some of the big winners of the night prove that the industry is at least taking small steps forward.
Michael Che and Colin Jost may have been the hosts, but The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a show about a woman’s struggle to break into comedy in the late ’50s, owned the night.
Rachel Brosnahan took home the first Emmy of her career for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Alex Borstein also won for Outstanding Supporting Actress. The show also won Outstanding Comedy Series. Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino won both the writing and directing awards in the comedy category for the show’s pilot.

Other big winners include Claire Foy (The Crown) in the hotly contested Lead Actress in a Drama series, Darren Criss (American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace), Thandie Newton (Westworld), Regina King (Seven Seconds), Matthew Rhys (The Americans), and Game of Thrones won Best Drama.
Henry Winkler’s kids had the best night if they took his advice and went to bed because “Daddy won!” for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
We’d like to shout out Brosnahan for taking some of her speech time to encourage people to vote, and Ryan Murphy for bringing awareness to the importance of legislation supporting the LBGTQ community.

We’d also like to send out a very public congratulations to Glenn Weiss and his girlfriend Jan Svendsen on their engagement during his acceptance speech for directing a variety special, and of course, Betty White, the First Lady of Television, for infusing the show with pure joy.
