The Shards is Ryan Murphy’s latest TV show, following an elite group of teenagers as their world of opulence dissolves into one of horror and madness.

This upcoming thriller is based on Bret Easton Ellis’s autofiction novel of the same name. Essentially, Ellis’s book details his senior year of high school in 1981 in Los Angeles through a fictional lens.

FX released the trailer for Season 1 of The Shards. It will release its first two episodes on Wednesday, August 5, at 9/8c on FX and Hulu, according to The Hollywood Reporter

The trailer has it all in terms of brash endeavors. There’s no shortage of drugs, drinking, lavish parties, and high-speed cars.

However, underneath all the glamour, wealth, and prep school uniforms, lies a much more sinister plot. According to Deadline, it involves a serial killer by the name of The Trawler whose victims are teenagers across Los Angeles.

The presence of The Trawler suspiciously begins after the arrival of new student Robert Mallory (Homer Gere).

From The Shards trailer, it’s clear the narrative’s driving force is the simmering tension between 17-year-old Bret Easton Ellis (Igby Rigney) and Robert.

Ellis, who is an aspiring writer, is seemingly set on uncovering the truth behind Mallory’s almost overly charming facade. However, from Ellis’s friends’ perspectives, his fixation on Mallory is one rooted in jealousy.

The Shards’ Season 1 synopsis details the blend of the overindulgent desires of these rich Californian teens and their encounters with real-life atrocities.

“Set against the vivid backdrop of 1980s Los Angeles, the series follows a group of privileged high school seniors at an elite prep school as they navigate identity, sex, jealousy, obsession and the dangers lurking beneath the surface of American adolescence,” it reads.
