Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 20 Review: The Winds of Change are Starting to Blow

Chicago Med, Reviews

Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 20, “The Winds of Change are Starting to Blow,” makes it very obvious that the doctors at Gaffney are struggling to adjust to the hospital’s new reality.

In previous episodes, the team of doctors and nurses on Chicago Med had always advocated for patients over profit. However, their hands are now tied and they have to figure out how to operate moving forward.

How long will it take for more people to join Maggie’s campaign to find a new job?

All About Money

From the moment Jack Dayton joined the hospital, we knew his luxurious gifts were too good to be true and it couldn’t last long. However, it didn’t take long for Goodwin and the rest of the doctors and nurses to see his true colors.

After advocating to change the hospital’s non-profit status, he is utilizing every trick on the book to make sure it is all about the money. He has gone as far as to allow wealthy patients to reserve OR 2.0 for as long as they want to, even if they aren’t having surgery at the time.

Obviously, none of the doctors are okay with these new changes. Lucky for them, they have Goodwin on their side.

It is clear that Goodwin has become frustrated with Dayton and his behavior. He does everything behind her back, then sends George to communicate the news.

Which raises the question, how good is George actually? At this point, it seems like Dayton has been using him to try and keep Goodwin at bay.

Little does he know there is no keeping Goodwin at bay and she will go down fighting.

“The Winds of Change are Starting to Blow” makes us wonder how far Dayton is willing to go to guarantee he makes money and no patients without insurance are treated.

When Marcel is in OR 2.0 operating, there is a moment when it seems as if there is a glitch in the system. Instead of immediately giving instructions, the system says “calculating” for longer than normal.

Later on, we discover the patient will be taken off life support. Marcel blames himself, but is he really to blame?

Or is it possible that there was something done to OR 2.0 to prevent a successful surgery?

It is sad to think that Dayton would play with the lives of patients this way, but that is what he is already doing by only caring about the money. Hopefully, the next few episodes will reveal the truth.

One of the best things Chicago Med has done throughout the seasons is always have Dr. Charles involved in a case, no matter what the episode is about.

This time around his appearance discusses the aftermath of COVID-19 and how isolation pushed people into their own research and conspiracy theories. Exactly what his patient is dealing with.

But while Charles is trying to help this woman, Maggie believes she is doing the same by pushing her to face her reality even though she isn’t ready. Something completely against what Charles believes.

It later comes to the light that Maggie reacted the way she did because it is a case that hits close too home with her previous cancer diagnosis. However, it helps us see once again that Maggie is key to the functioning of the hospital.

If she chooses to leave because of Dayton’s new rules, what would happen to the ED? Who could keep it under control the way Maggie does? And how many nurses would follow her lead?

A Love Triangle

Throughout Chicago Med Season 8, it has become very obvious that something has been brewing between Dean and Hannah. She cares about him and he only puts his guard down for her.

However, it seems like things are getting complicated as Sean is starting to develop feelings for Hannah — something Dean catches immediately.

Dean shuts down any idea Sean may have by reminding him he is still in recovery and should focus on himself. But is this true? Or is he slowly warning his son of his own feelings for Hannah?

This becomes a clear doubt in Sean when he sees how close Hannah and Dean are in the doctors’ lounge. The chemistry is very obvious and it is a matter of time until something happens.

Chicago Med is introducing a love triangle that we are probably not excited to deal with. While Sean came into the picture to help his father, things may get heated very fast.
