Killjoys: Top Quotes from ‘Last Dance’ (Series Finale)

Killjoys, Reviews

And just like that, it’s all over.

Killjoys Season 5 Episode 10, “Last Dance,” does a fantastic job of not only wrapping up the fight against The Lady but also saying goodbye to this world we’ve loved for five seasons now.

Overall, this is an absolutely amazing episode, and it does the series justice. It’s the perfect ending for such a stellar show.

There’s a lot of ground to cover when discussing the very last episode of Killjoys, so let’s take this one quote at a time.

1. The Master of Storytelling

Khlyen: Every story starts with a lie. That’s the job of the beginnings, to tell you you’re safe, that all of this lasts, and nothing will change. But underneath there are signs of your true story — who made you, who harmed you, what the hells you were born to fight. And you won’t want to hear it yet, so you’ll run, live, collect the things that matter along the way — an oath, your team, a home. Only then will you see the real enemy: her, last of a dying race come to destroy ours. She has her ships and her slaves, but you have them, this strange, messy, impossible family full of enemies and siblings, lovers, and hope. It doesn’t matter how your story begins. It’s about who is with you at the end.

Wow, right out of the gate Killjoys makes me emotional. This is the moment you know you are in for a fantastic finale.

I could not think of a better way to kick off the series finale than with a eerily fitting quote from Khlyen. He has such a weird talent for storytelling.

This quote aptly captivates our feelings of going into this finale while also giving a life lesson and tying it to the events unfolding on “Last Dance.”

2. Jaqobis Reunited

Jaq: You don’t get to protect your family by risking everyone else’s. That’s not how it works.
D’av: Remember when you were like a toddler for 5 hours and had no opinion? I miss that time.

Thank the gods for that explanation as to how Jaq and his mirror cube ended up on the Armada back on Killjoys Season 5 Episode 9, “Terraformance Anxiety.” It was driving me crazy.

Jaq endangering himself to try to protect his dad is pretty on par with his actions throughout the rest of the season.

It would’ve been nice to get more of an explanation of his abilities, both psychic and physical (I do not understand his half Aneela/half D’av explanation for surviving that bullet), but the final season didn’t really make room to explore the ever developing mystery that is Jaq Kin Rit.

The Jaqobis family reunion is adorable and sort of makes up for the lack of Jaqobis family bonding in the rest of the season. Johnny trying to get Jaq to use his psychic abilities on command, for instance, is amazingly hilarious.

It’s great that Jaq gets to be included in the final fight. He has a stake in it, more so than anyone, really, and so he deserves to be included. Another bonus is that his presence forces Aneela to enter the fray in a completely badass way.

Protective mom is such a great look on Aneela, and it’s wonderful watching her in action. I can’t help but picture Aneela bursting in when she feels/learns that Jaq got his heart broken, got picked on, or any of the other pains that come with growing up.

3. PIPPIN?!

Zeph: There’s been a complication.
Johnny: What kind?
Zeph: I found Pippin.
Johnny: What? How?
Zeph: I don’t know. I don’t understand, but I’ve got him, and I’m not letting him go, Johnny.
Johnny: Yeah, no, I get it, I get it. Pippin?! What?

My only real issue with this finale the return of Pippin.

I’m sorry, it’s too good to be true. There’s got to be a catch. He died in a horrific explosion way back on Killjoys Season 4 Episode 9, “The Kids Are Alright,” that left no room for any survivors.

It’s never explained how he’s back, and the fact that he encourages Zeph to “not look a gift Pippin in the mouth” makes the uneasy feeling even worse.

Then, not only is there the question of how he’s alive, but how he manages to end up in one of The Lady’s creepy cocoons.

As much as I love Zeph and Pippin, it would have been better if Pippin stayed dead because his return is never explained, and now I will forever think that he is somehow a spy for The Lady or secretly evil or something.

It’s clearly done to give Zeph a happy ending, but she doesn’t require a man to be happy. On top of that, the lack of explanation surrounding Pip’s return cheapens the whole thing. What are your thoughts on Pip’s miraculous return?

4. Mirror Cube Therapy

Dutch: I don’t want you to fix this!
Khlyen: Then what do you want me to do?
Dutch: I want you to stop making me feel small so you can feel big! I want you to stop hurting me, so you can save me! Because the only person I have ever needed saving from is you.

It’s no secret that Dutch and Khlyen have the most dysfunctional relationship in all of the J. No matter how much Khlyen hurts Dutch, she is always drawn to him, and she cares about him.

Going into the finale, I expected there to be some emotional scenes, but I didn’t think they were going to be between Dutch and Khlyen. Hannah John-Kamen knocks this scene out of the park.

It’s about time that Dutch really voiced her frustration and pain to Khlyen. Because somehow he has never really understood just what he was doing to her with his red boxes, manipulation, and secrecy.

I don’t know what the future holds for Khlyen and Dutch, but I’m glad she got to say her piece, and hopefully this will allow her to move on from the hold that Khlyen has on her. It’ll definitely help that Khlyen will be a galaxy away, exploring to his heart’s content.

Odds are a normal relationship will never be in the cards for Dutch and Khlyen, but maybe they’ll be on better terms from here on out.

5. Sleepover Fun Times

The Lady: I think I actually missed you. It’s the one thing I enjoyed in the green, sliding through your memories as if they were my own.

The Lady still has a lot to learn about being human because she throws the absolute worst sleepovers.

Sleepovers are supposed to be filled with fun games like truth or dare, movies, snacks, and a dance party or two….a willing dance party. There’s no mind control on the agenda.

It’s fascinating to hear The Lady acknowledge her feelings for Dutch, even if she doesn’t quite realize it. She learned a lot about humanity and the people she’s faced in this war through Dutch and her memories.

Dutch is who The Lady wants to be when she grows up. She especially wants to be a daughter that Khlyen loves (for reasons we will never fully understand).

When the fight gets serious enough to where someone, in this case Khlyen, might die, it slowly begins to dawn on The Lady that this isn’t fun for her anymore, but she doesn’t know why.

One thing that would’ve been great to explore further is this subtle shift in The Lady, where she becomes more and more human. Khlyen comments on it to Dutch, but it doesn’t really click for us until we see her in the mirror cube.

It’s fascinating.

6. Two Queens

Aneela: You do not owe me this. If you want to stay human, I will hold your hands when you turn gray. I will bury you with honor and burn worlds in your name, and you will not be forgotten.
Delle Seyah: Or?
Aneela: The war is over, and we have a son and an empire, and I need my queen.

Aneela and Delle Seyah manage to snag themselves an empire and a happily ever after. Talk about relationship goals.

The two of them were an unexpected romance, and I certainly didn’t imagine I would grow to love them as much as I did.

It’s sweet that Aneela offers Delle Seyah the chance to be hullen again while explaining that she would love Delle Seyah no matter what. This is such a romantic declaration from Aneela, and you can tell just how much Delle Seyah means to her.

Aneela went from being someone who wasn’t the biggest fans of humans to someone who was willing to spend the rest of her life married to one. Now that, ladies and gentlemen, is some character development.

There wasn’t a single doubt that Delle Seyah would choose to be hullen. It’s weirdly touching that Aneela shares plasma with her. Now, the two of them will always be bonded.

Naturally, I have to give this quote a shout out:

Delle Seyah: If Jaq breaks his first curfew, I will blame his father.

I’m all for this weird little family, and it’s a cute moment of co-parenting/blaming the other parent. D’av is in for so much sarcasm in the years to come from Delle Seyah.

Knowing that Delle Seyah will sass D’av from now until the end of time brings me great comfort.

7. Farewell

Dutch: I’m going to miss this.

Team Awesome Force defeats The Lady, but the war is far from over.

Honestly, it’s better that everything isn’t wrapped up in a perfect bow. It’s more believable.

It would have been too clean of an ending if everything is handled in one fell swoop. Team Awesome Force does defeat The Lady, so their initial mission is complete, but now they have a new fight ahead of them. While it’s a serious one, it’s not as big of a threat as The Lady was.

It’s a little fitting that The Lady, who became obsessed with Dutch’s life and earning Khlyen’s love, is now human in a mirror cube, being handed red boxes by Dutch. Hopefully, at some point she picks a name because Dutch can’t keep calling her The Lady forever.

As for our trio, “Last Dance” ends with D’av, Dutch, and Johnny going out for “one last” mission before Johnny departs. For a moment, it’s like old times, watching the three of them suit up and talk about who is taking what hatchling.

It’s a fitting, open ending that shows that nothing really has or will change between our favorite killjoys, even if Johnny and Lucy are leaving for a bit.

Like Dutch, we’re also going to miss this. Thank you, Killjoys, for a fantastic five seasons filled with sarcastic banter, love, badassery, laughter, and family. My summers won’t be the same without you.

You’ll always stay with me as one of my favorite shows. Tap my heart.

Stray Thoughts:
  • Delle Seyah making Pree governor is such a heartwarming moment, and a reminder that the two of them should’ve been paired up more.
  • Fancy dancing during the prison rave is EVERYTHING.
  • The fact that Turin is grumpy about everyone being hungover is one of the reasons why I love him so.

  • Jaq survived the bullet because he’s half-Hullen from his mom. But he heals at a slower rate because he’s also half-Human from his dad.

  • Great Review–thorough and oh so accurate. Love the way you quote the quips which is one of the wonderful elements of this very entertaining TV series–almost made me cry ;o). The writers are amazing and the actors are superbly talented. What a fantastic ensemble! Needless to say, I totally concur that the series deserves a 5 Star rating.
