Killjoys Review: The Kids Are Alright (Season 4 Episode 9)

Killjoys, Reviews

Killjoys Season 4 Episode 9, “The Kids are Alright,” is basically a mini-movie. It’s action-packed, heartbreaking, and ends on one hells of a twist. There’s no other way to say it — it’s pure awesomeness.

The premise is simple: rescue the children from the RAC. Of course, the mission doesn’t go off without a hitch, and there’s still the even bigger mission of stopping The Lady.

The speedbumps along the way only add to the thrill of the mission. They aren’t pointless side storylines that take you out of the excitement of the rescue op.

In fact, they tie into the save Aneela/defeat The Lady mission.

It’s fascinating learning about what the scar on Dutch’s back means, and Dutch’s brief stint in the born again cult gives us intriguing clues into what Aneela is trying to tell her. The fact that Aneela knew that she would be able to get through to Dutch shows how skilled Aneela is.

The fact that the scar is related to the Scarback religion is great. The Scarbacks are such an interesting group, and it’s always great when we get a peek into their culture.

Another highlight of the mission is the fact that Team Awesome Force is finally back together.

It feels like ages since we’ve seen everyone in the same place, taking orders from a grumpy Turin. Seeing that dynamic again is a nice touch of nostalgia.

D’av and Fancy’s Hullen kill count bet is such a D’av and Fancy thing to do, and it injects some levity into the hour.

Team Awesome Force taking on this mission together also demonstrates how high the stakes are for everyone. This may have started out as a war that only Dutch had a stake in, but it’s grown so much bigger than her.

Weej and Pip’s deaths aren’t completely unexpected, but, gods, are they heartbreaking.

The two of them managed to worm their way into our hearts and, more impressively, Turin’s heart. They go out as heroes.

Zeph: You know what they say about Team Awesome Force? They say D’av will take the bullet, John will fix what’s broken, and Dutch will bring you home. You were supposed to bring him home .

Pip and Zeph’s final moments are so beautiful, and it’s practically impossible not to sob — hells, even Weej’s death is sad enough to make you cry.

You can always count on Killjoys to deliver some hilarious banter, but “The Kids Are Alright” proves that the show knows how to deliver some gut-wrenching blows, which is the sign of an excellent show.

As we try to dry the tears from Pip’s death, Killjoys does the unexpected.

Dutch: You’re the thief who saved my life, but you need a better guide, someone to bring us home when we kick The Lady’s ass.

Aneela and Dutch switch places! This makes complete sense, strategy-wise, and it provides the chance to really have fun with the team dynamics.

Johnny and D’av having to work side by side with Aneela? It’s going to be so much fun. Who else is going to be tuning into the finale with popcorn?

Stray Thoughts:

  • Johnny promising Delle Seyah that he’ll save Aneela is such a touching moment that highlights how big Johnny’s heart is.
  • Delle Seyah reacting to Jaq’s name is amazing.
  • JAQ ASKING D’AV NOT TO FORGET HIM; IT’S FINE.
  • While it’s not hard to see where Johnny is coming from, I’m going to need D’av, Johnny, and Dutch to always be traveling through space together.

  • Nice review!! It was one of their best episodes!! I was really sad when they killed weej more than Pip for some reason. Maybe it’s because he was just getting more human and we were just Beto know him!! But Pip will definitely be missed too!! ??

    • Agreed! I’ve been blown away by this season. Both deaths were rough. I didn’t really expect to cry over Weej’s death, but Turin freaking broke my heart. I’ll miss both of them, for sure.

  • Nice review! It was one of there best episodes!! I felt more when the killed Weej because I felt that he was becoming more human and we did not have time to get to know him!! But Pip will definitely be missed too!! ??
