15 Supernatural Teen TV Shows to Sink Your Teeth Into if You’re Excited About ‘Wolf Pack’

Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Legacies, Lists, Marvel's Runaways, Nancy Drew, Shadowhunters, Teen Wolf, The Vampire Diaries, The Winchesters, Vampire Academy, Wolf Pack

Supernatural stories and teen dramas go hand-in-hand as monsters translate all too well to the metaphorical ones in coming-of-age stories.

From the subgenre’s staples like Buffy the Vampire Slayer to newer additions like Netflix’s Wednesday, the appeal of shows like these only continues to grow. Paramount+’s Wolf Pack will join the ranks when it premieres on Thursday, January 26 on Paramount+.

Per its logline, the series “follows a teenage boy and girl whose lives are forever changed when a California wildfire awakens a terrifying supernatural creature.”

If you’re looking to watch something within the subgenre that will hold you over until Wolf Pack premieres, there’s no shortage of options. Here are 15 supernatural teen TV shows to sink your teeth into:

1. Teen Wolf

Despite Wolf Pack premiering on the same day as the Teen Wolf: Movie, the new drama focused on teenage werewolves has no connection to the pack in Beacon Hills. However, if you haven’t watched Teen Wolf, it is worth checking out.

Teen Wolf is a scrappy show that grows into an impressive addition to the TV subgenre over its six seasons. The MTV series has it all — from unforgettably campy dialogue (who can forget “My mom does all the grocery shopping?”) to slow-burn ships (Looking at you, Stydia!).

Teen Wolf repeatedly combines the highs and lows of teen drama with the darkest corners of horror. For instance, Dylan O’Brien’s run as Void Stiles in Teen Wolf‘s outstanding third season should be cherished forever.

2. Marvel’s Runaways

Runaways is one of Marvel’s most underrated TV shows, along with Cloak and Dagger.

This cast is stacked with performers who have impressive resumes in other supernatural shows — Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s James Marsters, The Vampire Diaries‘ Annie Wersching, and Wizards of Waverly Place‘s Gregg Sulkin.

Runaways gives the “found family” trope a superhero twist as a group of teenagers come together after a personal tragedy to stop their supervillain parents and save the world. Plus, there’s time travel!

Even with a short, three-season run, this coming-of-age series sticks the superhero landing with lovable characters and pitch-perfect ships (Gertchase! Deanoru!). Most of all, Runaways balances the grounded nature of teen stories with the larger scope of superhero antics, proving they complement each other.

3. The Order
The Order Season 2 Episode 1

Besides Teen Wolf, Netflix’s The Order is one of the only supernatural teen dramas with a keen focus on werewolves.

This show elevates the typical story by introducing a collegiate backdrop with Belgrave University.

Belgrave has more mysteries than freshman Jack Morton ever expected, including a secret society of magicians called the Hermetic Order of the Blue Rose and another of werewolves, The Knights of Saint Christopher.

In only two seasons, The Order juggles magic, murder, romance, and generational rivalries as Jack’s mission to avenge his mother’s death by killing his father becomes much more mystifying.

4. Legacies
Legacies Season 4 Episode 19, "This Can Only End in Blood"

Legacies expands The Vampire Diaries Universe to the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted where Klaus Mikaelson and Hayley Marshall’s daughter, Hope, and Caroline Forbes and Alaric Saltzman’s twin daughters, Lizzie and Josie, save the world with their friends, the Super Squad.

Legacies‘ positioning in its shared universe creates a unique opportunity to reflect on and critique the franchise’s missteps.

Furthermore, the premise finds its roots in fostering a safe place for young supernatural characters to be themselves and learn how to hone their skills.

Even as Legacies veers away from using its boarding school as a school, it embraces the monster-of-the-week format that other shows on this list also utilize, which helps the show stand out from the serialized format of its predecessors.

5. Vampire Academy
Vampire Academy Season 1 Episode 2
VAMPIRE ACADEMY — “Earth. Air. Water. Fire.” Episode 102 — Pictured: (l-r) Daniela Nieves as Lissa Dragomir, Sisi Stringer as Rose Hathaway — (Photo by: Jose Haro/Peacock)

Vampire Academy brings Richelle Mead’s YA novels to the small screen and blends intensive world-building with multi-faceted politics.

With Lissa Dragomir and Rose Hathaway as the show’s heroines, Vampire Academy doesn’t miss a beat as it plunges the best friends into the depths of everything from classic romantic woes with a supernatural twist to generational rivalries among different vampire factions.

Vampire Academy‘s scope expands beyond the Dominion’s wards throughout its fast-paced debut season, testing the characters and the world they think they know.

Even then, the Peacock series crafts believable relationships among its characters, like the pivotal friendship between the leads and their respective romances. Vampire Academy is a must-watch show in the vampire TV renaissance.

6. Wednesday
Wednesday Season 1 Episode 1

Though one of the newest shows on this list, Netflix’s Wednesday leaves a lasting impression with a fresh take on a truly iconic character.

Jenna Ortega stuns as Wednesday Addams. Wednesday’s first semester at Nevermore Academy is complete with a monster running rampant, a murder mystery, and Wednesday’s own psychic abilities emerging. To say she goes through a lot in Season 1 is an understatement.

Wednesday introduces a love triangle for the titular character, but Wednesday’s other half comes through her technicolor best friend, Enid Sinclair, who happens to be a werewolf.

The debut season is a fun watch filled with engaging characters and several twists and turns that make it no wonder the series has been a global phenomenon, even inspiring a TikTok trend. Thankfully, there’s more to come as Season 2 has been announced.

7. Nancy Drew
Nancy Drew Season 3 Episode 2

Most of the shows on this list deal with the supernatural in the form of vampires, witches, and werewolves, but The CW’s Nancy Drew finds its niche in the paranormal. The YA series brings the beloved sleuth to the small screen through an impeccable performance by Kennedy McMann.

Set in the small coastal town of Horseshoe Bay, the titular character finds her Drew Crew in George Fan, Bess Marvin, Ned ‘Nick’ Nickerson, and Ace. Together they solve mysteries ranging from ones threatening their lives, like the Aglaeca, to those threatening the town, like Temperance Hudson.

Furthermore, the mystery series delivers one of the best slow-burn ships on TV with Nancy and Ace, affectionately called Nace by fans.

Any summary of Nancy Drew doesn’t do the mystery series justice as it wears — and pulls off — many hats. It’s a confident and creative show that takes big, dramatic swings and still hits every comedic beat. It’s a true feat!

8. Shadowhunters

SHADOWHUNTERS – “On Infernal Ground” – (Freeform/John Medland) EMERAUDE TOUBIA, KATHERINE MCNAMARA, ISAIAH MUSTAFA, DOMINIC SHERWOOD, MATTHEW DADDARIO

Plenty of the shows on this list have passionate fans, but the Shadowhunters fandom remains unmatched in its dedication to the series even after it ended in 2019.

The Freeform series still sparks conversations on social media as hashtags for its favorite ships (Malec, Clace, Sizzy, etc.) trend.

Understandably so, since this coming-of-age show catches its second wind in its sophomore season when Clary Fray’s adventures in the Shadow World get bigger and better. From there, the heroine comes up against and beside Seelies (i.e., fairies), werewolves, vampires, demons, angels, and fellow Shadowhunters.

Shadowhunters dives into the idea that all the legends are true and creates stakes in a fantastical world by showcasing the grounded appeal of supernatural stories.

9. The Winchesters

The Winchesters is an entertaining addition because, like few others on this list, it contributes to the recent resurgence of teen supernatural shows.

It also has a hefty legacy sitting on its shoulders as The Winchesters tells John Winchester and Mary Campbell’s love story, serving as a prologue to Dean and Sam’s decades-long journey on Supernatural

Instead of buckling under that immense pressure, the YA show takes on that mission with pride as John and Mary become even more established characters through Drake Rodger and Meg Donnelly’s performances.

Beyond that duo at the show’s heart, The Winchesters brings together a team of monster hunters, not unlike other found families that exist within shows like it.

10. First Kill
First Kill Season 1
First Kill. (L to R) Imani Lewis as Calliope Burns, Sarah Catherine Hook as Juliette Fairmont.

Based on V.E. Schwab’s short story Vampires Never Get Old: Tales with Fresh Bite, First Kill revamps Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet so that a vampire falls in love with a vampire hunter.

The campy show orbits around Sarah Catherine Hook’s Juliette Fairmont and Imani Lewis’ Calliope “Cal” Burns’ forbidden romance as Juliette plans to make Calliope her first kill, and Calliope is set on making Juliette the first vampire she slays.

As drama ensues between Juliette’s vampire family and Calliope’s family of slayers, the girls’ love for each other defies the expectations set for them. Hopefully, the short-lived show will receive everlasting appreciation in its immortality on Netflix.

From its mythology to its (still divisive) love triangle between a teenage girl and two vampire brothers, The Vampire Diaries is a pillar in the subgenre.

Not only does it eventually launch a franchise that consists of three series, but TVD is also a part of a beloved era of teen dramas. Premiering in 2009, it debuted the same year as Glee and aired alongside Pretty Little Liars and Teen Wolf.

During its eight-season run, The Vampire Diaries builds a world filled with all the classic supernatural beings and more, like doppelgangers and one of the best villains-turned-anti-heroes on TV — the hybrid Klaus Mikaelson.

TVD takes the early 2000s reinforced interest in vampires and love triangles and runs with it to exciting new heights that help it live on in the subgenre forever.

12. The Secret Circle

The Secret Circle is another series that finds a renewed audience in its afterlife. The CW canceled the show about a coven of teen witches after one season.

Regardless of that ill fate, The Secret Circle successfully mixes small-town magic with big-time generational tensions.

Season 1 only gains momentum with every magical plot twist in Chance Harbor.

With Kevin Williamson as an executive producer and a cast that includes Britt Robertson, Phoebe Tonkin, and Shelley Hennig, The Secret Circle has a creative team that knows how to elevate teen drama with an engaging, supernatural story.

Fate: The Winx Saga reimagines the recognizable characters from the animated series Winx Club and relocates them to Alfea College in the Otherworld.

The live-action venture uses the boarding school as the backdrop for the teens learning how to use their magical powers as rivalries emerge and romance blossoms.

Even though Netflix canceled the series after two seasons, Fate: The Winx Saga is well worth the watch. Be aware, Season 2’s cliffhanger will inspire you to join the online conversations to #SaveFateTheWinxSaga.

14. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA Season 2 on Netflix
CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina establishes itself as Riverdale‘s dark and twisty cousin upon its debut in 2018.

The Netflix series offers a dramatic reimagining of the comedic stylings of the ’90s sitcom, Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Kiernan Shipka brings the iconic Sabrina Spellman to life with a distinct edge that gives CAOS a different appeal.

With four seasons to enjoy, CAOS will pull you into the creepy adventures of the beloved teen witch, her friends, and the Spellman family.

15. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sarah Michelle Gellar

There’s no version of this list, or any like it, without Buffy the Vampire Slayer — the blueprint for supernatural teen dramas.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who will star in Wolf Pack, headlines the ’90s WB series as the titular character who slays vampires (and sometimes falls in love with one or two) and saves the world with expert flair and wit.

Whether the inclusion of a Scooby Gang group of sleuthing teens or something resembling the Hellmouth, BTVS paved the path in many ways.

So, appreciating this subgenre in TV encourages at least a baseline understanding of this indelible series that will like influence shows for generations to come.

Wolf Pack premieres on Thursday, January 26 on Paramount+.
