The Good Doctor Spinoff Series ‘The Good Lawyer’ to Star Kennedy McMann and Felicity Huffman
The Good Doctor shared universe will expand with ABC’s spinoff series, The Good Lawyer, starring Kennedy McMann and Felicity Huffman.
According to Variety, the new series has received a backdoor pilot order at the network, and it will air during The Good Doctor‘s sixth season on Monday, March 6.
The Good Doctor returns with new episodes on Monday, January 23, on ABC.

The Good Doctor‘s co-showrunners David Shore and Liz Friedman will write the pilot, while Ruben Fleischer will direct. Sony Pictures Television and ABC Signature will produce.
The Good Lawyer‘s backdoor pilot sees “Dr. Shaun Murphy seeks legal representation to help him win a case and puts his faith in a promising, young lawyer who has obsessive compulsive disorder.”
Per TV Line, McMann portrays the aforementioned young lawyer, Joni DeGroot. Joni’s official character breakdown describes her as “the brilliant, funny, and self-aware lawyer who is relatively new to her prestigious law firm when she takes Shaun’s case.”
“Living with OCD, Joni has never wanted to be treated differently. While her symptoms take a toll on her personal and professional life, her attention to detail allows her to see cases through a different lens,” it continues.

As for Huffman, she will play Janet Stewart, who is described as “a highly regarded attorney and partner at the law firm with a fierce intellect and dry wit.”
“A seasoned veteran, Janet has represented Dr. Aaron Glassman in several legal matters over the years, so he turns to her to represent his beloved protégé. But when Shaun declares that he wants Joni to represent him, Janet is forced to let Joni take lead on the case.”
TV Line shares that ABC notes that McMann “started acting as a child as a way to cope with her own OCD.”
Though McMann will appear as Joni on The Good Doctor in March, the actress will also wrap up her tenure as Nancy Drew in the show’s fourth and final season on The CW later this season.
