On Doc Season 2 Episode 19, “Next,” Michael surprised everyone at Westside by deciding to replace Joan himself. While that decision surprised the Westside staff, it probably shouldn’t surprise viewers.
Michael has had a rough year personally and professionally. On the professional front, the hospital has faced nonstop crises, and he has been at odds with the hospital’s higher-ups since the season premiere.
After being reminded how much he missed working with patients on Doc Season 2 Episode 18, “Orientation,” his decision makes a lot of sense.
However, Michael’s first day as Chief will be a trial by fire. Before he even has time to adjust his office chair, he will have to deal with a devastating development for the staff, particularly Amy.
Joan’s health takes a sudden turn as her condition progresses into full-blown leukemia, putting her at death’s door. Despite Amy’s frantic attempts to save her, Joan’s situation looks pretty dire. This inevitably leads to another conflict between Amy and Richard, who is also treating her.
As if that wasn’t enough, there are also the new allegations from Liz about Richard telling her to lie and say Amy gave his patient the wrong medicine, not him. Michael has his hands full already, and he hasn’t even been in the job for 24 hours. Guess it’s a good thing he is so used to putting out fires at Westside.
