Law & Order Season 25 Episode 16 Review: Fate’s Cruel Joke

Law & Order, Reviews

Law & Order Season 25 Episode 16, “Fate’s Cruel Joke,” does an incredible job of reminding us why Jessica Brady is in charge. She knows how to handle interrogations, lead her team, and be there for her detectives (or as much as they let her).

But the true star of the episode is Vince, as we see him deal with an accident on the job and push his sobriety to the limit. The work Reid Scott does on this episode is quite remarkable, making viewers feel his desperation, sadness, and guilt right alongside him.

When watching a show like Law & Order or its franchise siblings, viewers are always on the edge of their seats during chase scenes. These detectives running or driving around one of the busiest cities in the world as they chase after suspects is one of the most thrilling moments of the series.

However, we’re always afraid an innocent civilian might get hurt. This time around, that is exactly what happens on this episode. As Theo and Vince chase a suspect down the streets of New York, a mailman walks out on the street as Vince is speeding by and gets hit. Sadly, as a result of the impact, the man is declared brain dead, and his family decides to unplug him.

Unsurprisingly, Vince is terribly affected by this. As viewers, we’re stuck between feeling terrible for the mailman and his family, and feeling Vince’s guilt and sadness. The entire episode keeps us connected to our emotions as we struggle with the character.

We are, of course, extremely disappointed when both Theo and Vince lie, saying they saw something in the suspect’s hand that might have been a gun. It is clear as day that the suspect was carrying a phone and a selfie stick, not a gun. They lie to protect Vince, but adding that guilt to everything else on his shoulder pushes Vince to a breaking point.

Scott’s best performance comes when he drunkenly stumbles into Price’s office after being a no-show for court. The rawness of his performance shines through, particularly in his eyes that look bewildered and drunk.

Immediately, Price and the audience can tell that Vince is drunk, his sobriety down the drain, and the guilt has been eating at him from the beginning. While we can understand why he chooses to come clean about the fact that he lied about the gun, Price, as he says, is not the right person to hear his confession.

Nevertheless, this precise moment is necessary for Price to do what’s right for the case. His words to Vince, remarking that one accident cannot be what ruins the rest of his life, are exactly what he needed to hear to make the choice about the plea deal.

Undoubtedly, everything that happens throughout the episode is there to lead to the final moment. The writers do an incredible job of tying every loose end so that nothing is placed at random.

Now, it’ll be interesting to see how Vince gets back on the road to recovery.

And we obviously cannot talk about Law & Order Season 25 Episode 16, “Fate’s Cruel Joke,”  without mentioning Jane Lynch’s performance. She is the perfect actor to portray the defense lawyer in this case.

She becomes the lawyer, lives in her skin, and delivers quite a memorable performance, reminding us that the beauty of the Law & Order franchise lies in the hundreds of guest stars who jump in and out every week to bring powerful storylines to life.
