Quinta Brunson is Staying Focused on ‘Abbott Elementary’ [Video]
Following her win for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for Abbott Elementary, Quinta Brunson spoke with reporters backstage at the 74th Emmy® Awards about her work on the series.
Brunson spoke first about the importance of teachers and also mentioned her former teacher, Ms. Abbott, the namesake for Abbott Elementary.
“Ms. Abbott knows how much I love her, and I love her just as much as all the other amazing teachers in my life, including my own mother who really inspired Abbott Elementary,” Brunson said.

“We need more teachers, so they need to be paid more so that people want to become teachers. Because with what they get paid, I wouldn’t want to become a teacher right now. But it’s an important profession that needs to be respected,” she continued.
When asked if she might consider taking on some different risks or even venturing into drama, Brunson said her focus was going to remain on Abbott Elementary for now.
“I have no urge to do that right now. I really want to focus on Abbott. I really want to keep making it a great show, and I think that requires an extreme amount of focus,” Brunson said.

“Not only am I writing on this show, but I act in the show, I produce the show with my wonderful producers Justin [Halpern], Patrick [Schumaker], and Randall [Einhorn] — who I forgot to thank on stage. My God I feel so bad about that,” Brunson said.
“But it’s really a four-headed beast and I want to be there to help make Abbott the best comedy it can be. Maybe one day I’ll venture into other stuff, but I’m really just taking it one day at a time.”
