New Amsterdam Season 4 Catch-Up: Everything You Need to Remember Ahead of New Amsterdam Season 5

Features, New Amsterdam, Recaps

New Amsterdam Season 5 is returning next week, and there is a lot to unpack before we dive in. New Amsterdam Season 4 was chaotic, with the series hitting new highs and lows.

Before we enter the anarchy that Season 5 is sure to be, we’re looking back at our favorite characters and relationships that shaped last season. Let’s catch up with the DamFam, and what you need to know before the new season begins.

Everything You Need to Remember About New Amsterdam Season 4:

Sharpwin:

After setting up Helen and Max as endgame (Sharpwin, as they’re known to fans), New Amsterdam has ripped the rug out from under us with the news that Freema Agyeman will not be returning for the upcoming season.

Helen and Max went through so much in Season 4. Their decision to leave New Amsterdam Hospital shook up the family we’ve been rooting for from the beginning of this show.

While in London, we saw a new side of Helen and Max’s relationship. Helen, in particular, was given a chance to delve into her past and confront her mother, with whom she’s always had a tense relationship.

After shaking things up with their move, Max immediately had to return to New York to fix Veronica Fuentes’ mess. Helen had to visit of course, which unfortunately resulted in disaster for her.

While in New York, Helen suffered a stroke, which was never addressed again. New Amsterdam definitely has a history of magically making medical situations disappear (*cough* Max’s cancer *cough*), but this was a new level of unbelievability.

The remainder of the season saw Helen and Max mostly separated and communicating via phone calls. There were absolutely some sweet moments, but as the season went on, it became clear how much the show suffers when they’re apart.

That finale left everyone reeling with the reveal that Helen never made it back to New York to marry Max. Sharpwin has been set up from Day 1, and it’s beyond frustrating that fans will never get to see these two be happy together. They deserved that much.

Lauren and Leyla

Aside from Sharpwin, it can be argued that Leyla and Lauren have always had the most potential in terms of romantic relationships on New Amsterdam. It’s been a tough road for them.

There has always been a power differential between these two, with Leyla being a refugee and financially dependent on Lauren to a certain extent. Season 4 was the first time the show tried to address this.

After being betrayed and finding out that Lauren had essentially paid for a residency position for Leyla, it makes sense that Leyla spent so much of this season justifiably angry.

Season 4 really showed these two at their best and at their worst. In the end, there’s clearly hope for them as we see them trying to reconnect and re-establish lost trust.

Season 4 featured so many moments of these two showing what brilliant doctors they are. This was a good reminder for viewers last season since so much of their respective character development has revolved around the relationship.

The individual growth these two got last season just made them both more endearing. Lauren’s recovery journey is particularly poignant. This has been a stop-and-start road for her, which of course, is true to life.

Season 4 was a moment of reckoning for Lauren as she was continually faced with the choice to fall back into destructive habits or create new ones. She spent a lot of time recognizing the harm she had caused Leyla.

If fans can’t have Sharpwin, perhaps there’s at least one romantic couple we can cheer for in the final season.

Iggy and Martin
New Amsterdam Season 4 Episode 22, "I'll Be Your Shelter"

It has to be said from the outset that Martin deserves far better. Indeed, he is one of the most underrated characters who gets done progressively dirtier by the New Amsterdam powers that be.

It must also be said that as an actor, Tyler Labine is always fun to watch. His character, however, remains the absolute worst. That’s the best that can be said of Iggy Frome.

Iggy remains one of the worst fake psychiatrists in the history of TV medical dramas. Season 4 was more of the same, plus more shenanigans. He truly outdid himself when it came to providing the worst possible advice to his patients.

Arguably the worst moment for Iggy this past season was when he told the survivor of a mass shooting that it was okay that the patient’s father thought that it was all a hoax. Yes, that actually happened, and it was terrible.

By the end of the season, in classic Iggy fashion, he managed to blame Martin for every one of his problems rather than taking any form of accountability. This definitely is in keeping with how downhill Iggy has gone as a character.

Strangely, during the massive storm that rocked New Amsterdam and the city of New York in the season finale, it was Iggy who was thrust into a leadership role, leading staff and patients through the worst of it.

It was clear that Iggy was not at all suited to the Max-style leadership that he was thrust into in this emergency situation. If anything, at minimum, it demonstrated why this character has been lacking for the last season.

Martin’s fate was left hanging in the balance, and we don’t know if these two will be getting back together. For the sake of healthy relationships everywhere, the answer is hopefully no.

Floyd et al.

To be honest, there is more than ample opportunity to have polyamorous relationships take center stage on New Amsterdam. Just this season, there was incredible chemistry between Floyd, Lauren, and Mia. There was something there.

However, the way that New Amsterdam has put Floyd in such a mess of a situation last season was further proof that this show has always struggled to tell this character’s story.

The best that Season 4 could offer Floyd was the revelation that he’s going to be a father. It was generally uncomfortable seeing so much of Floyd’s character ride on that single revelation.

The end of Season 4 possibly gave Floyd something to do. His new quest became to connect with his father. He did manage to find the man and ended up in a forced-proximity situation during the storm on the season finale.

Other Things That Happened on New Amsterdam Season 4:
  • Vijay died. This was mentioned maybe twice and never brought up again.
  • Fuentes is gone and not a moment too soon. You honestly don’t even need to remember her story, and she made basically no impact (even though there was that time they gave her a weird backstory episode).
  • Luna is still adorable, in case you had forgotten.
  • Walsh got a chance to be in charge of the ED temporarily. It’s what he deserved, since he is such an underappreciated and underused character.
