Freema Agyeman Not Returning for Final Season of ‘New Amsterdam’
New Amsterdam‘s fifth and final season will look very different since Freema Agyeman will not be returning as Dr. Helen Sharpe.
Ahead of Season 5’s premiere in September, TVLine exclusively reported the news of her departure, including statements from Agyeman and New Amsterdam‘s creator/showrunner David Schulner and executive producer Peter Horton.

Freema Agyeman has portrayed Dr. Helen Sharpe since New Amsterdam debuted on NBC in 2018. Helen has worn many hats on the medical drama, including head of Oncology and Deputy Medical Director.
Along the way, Helen and Max Goodwin, the hospital’s newest Medical Director, fell in love in a slow-burn romance (i.e., Sharpwin) that captured fans’ hearts.
Max and Helen’s romantic relationship take an unexpected turn on New Amsterdam Season 4 Episode 22, “I’ll Be Your Shelter.” Amongst other complicated moving parts, an impromptu wedding, an intense storm, and an ocean between them broke the couple apart.
Helen stayed in London, where the couple relocated upon Helen getting a new job outside of New Amsterdam. A heartbreaking phone call to her fiancée revealed that Helen couldn’t marry Max.

That tumultuous ending and Agyeman’s departure begs whether New Amsterdam will find a way to resolve that story — and that romance — that has developed over the last four seasons.
As TV Insider notes, Agyeman reposted her statement on Instagram. Her statement to TVLine acknowledges the medical drama’s passionate fanbase, affectionately deemed the Dam Fam. “Dearest Dam Fam. First off I would like to say a huge heartfelt thank you for your unending, dedicated, and deliciously ferocious support!” Agyeman said.
“I feel very fortunate to have connected with so many of you over these past few years, while rolling around in the skin of Ms. Helen Sharpe, and witness every ebb and flow of your emotional investment. What a ride!” Agyeman continued.
“Thank you for being on it with me. She has meant so much to me, but the time has come for me to hang up her white coat, as I officially share the news that I will not be returning for the final season of New Amsterdam,” she added.

“While I am saddened, I am also incredibly excited to see how the story concludes as a fan of the series. It has been such a joy to play Dr. Helen Sharpe for 4 seasons — those writers built a badass! Beyond grateful for the opportunity to tell some of her stories! Fanfic — it’s over to you to tell the rest!! Lots of love Fam!” Agyeman concluded.
New Amsterdam‘s creator/showrunner David Schulner and executive producer Peter Horton added: “We wish Freema the best of luck on her next chapter and the doors of New Amsterdam will always be open if she wishes to return!”
“We are extremely proud of the impact Freema and Dr. Helen Sharpe have made over these past four seasons and are so grateful to have been a part of that story. As we head into the fifth and final season, we want our #Sharpwin fans to know we still have a few surprises in store for them,” they continued.
So, while it’s bittersweet to know that Freeman Agyeman won’t continue her role as the formidable Dr. Helen Sharpe on New Amsterdam Season 5, there’s some hope in knowing the door is open for her return. As previously reported, the final season will see Sandra Mae Frank’s Dr. Elizabeth Wilder as a series regular.
