New Amsterdam Season 4 Episode 10 ‘New Amsterdam’ to End with Season 5 on NBC

‘New Amsterdam’ to End with Season 5 on NBC

New Amsterdam, News

Paging all New Amsterdam fans! The medical drama will end its run with its upcoming fifth season on NBC.

Deadline exclusively reported the news, sharing New Amsterdam‘s final season will be its shortest, consisting of 13 episodes.

The fifth season within itself isn’t news to the series. Instead, it’s a part of a three-year pickup made by NBC in 2020 that secured the drama through its 2022-23 season.

New Amsterdam, currently in its fourth season, “has slipped in the ratings, currently ranking below most established NBC dramas, which makes for challenging economics given its cost.” The show is set in and shoots in New York.

According to Deadline, it’s still a “respectable performer, averaging a 1.13 rating in adults 18-49 and 7.2 million viewers in Live+7 and multi-platform viewing this season despite air pattern challenges.”

The show takes frequent, sometimes month-long, hiatuses to cater to NBC’s other programming, like the Winter Olympics and The Thing About Pam.

Nevertheless, the series has a devoted fanbase, and its uplifting manner likely contributes to its reception. President, Scripted Programming, NBCUniversal Television & Streaming, Lisa Katz spoke to as much in a statement.

“The story of Max Goodwin, and his never-ending commitment to patients at New Amsterdam, has been inspiring. We’re so grateful to David Schulner, Peter Horton, and our cast and crew for their incredible dedication, talent, and collaboration,” Katz said.

New Amsterdam‘s optimism within its narratives and for what the world could be inspires its audience, Katz, and Erin Underhill, President, Universal Television.

“When I first read the pilot script for New Amsterdam, I knew we had a winner. We cheered Max’s disruption of the status quo and applauded when he asked his patients the simple yet profound question, ‘How can I help?” Underhill added.

“Over the last four seasons, David, Peter, and our incredible cast have tackled important and thought-provoking stories that have touched on the human condition, but also made us laugh and imbued hope. We’re so proud of this series and are indebted to everyone involved in bringing New Amsterdam to life. Bravo!” Underhill continued.

Katz and Underhill touch on what makes New Amsterdam such a fan-favorite show amongst its viewers. It has heartwarming, inspiring, and thoughtful storytelling centered around rich characters in a dynamic world of ever-evolving medicine.

In Season 4, Max Goodwin, who stepped down as medical director of New Amsterdam to be with Dr. Helen Sharpe in the UK, returns to the hospital to challenge its new director, Dr. Veronica Fuentes. That season returns to NBC on Tuesday, April 14, and Deadline confirms its season finale is slated for May 24.

Of course, there’s always a level of sadness that comes with saying goodbye to a beloved series, but it’s comforting to know New Amsterdam will get to wrap up on its own terms. Until then, there is still plenty of time to enjoy this show and its storytelling.

  • New Amsterdam is a Great show!!! I really don’t understand why y’all are cancelling all the Great shows and replacing them with CRAPPY ones!?!?!? I am not the only one who is saying this I’ve read up on the subject, also heard it from many other people!!! It’s really Rediclous!!! It’s just B***S**T!!!
    Signed… Frustrated

  • I’m unsure why you’ve had this much drama in mid-season 4 than with all other seasons combined. Waiting 3 years for Max and Helen to get together, and finally, in S4 it happens in the first episode but short-lived with problems ever since. S4 has been disastrous w/the London arc, i.e , relo, unresolved problems with her mom/Max; Veronica, Floyd’s polyamorous arc, now Helen’s stroke, etc. Why you decided to take this particular path is beyond unbelievable to most die-hard Sharpwin fans.
Now that we know S5 will be an abbreviated 13-episode season, there needs to be much ground to cover to right all the wrongs that have occurred.
The majority of fans simply want to see a happy ending, especially with Sharpwin meaning marriage, baby/babies (boy/girl twins would be nice), Floyd having a relationship he deserves – – and not with Mia, etc. The writers, showrunner, producers, etc., need to think long and hard over the summer to get it right for the series finale, i.e., a 2-hr. finale would be great with a timejump and/or future look for all the characters.
