‘New Amsterdam’ Promotes Sandra Mae Frank to Series Regular for Final Season

New Amsterdam‘s fifth and final season will feature the return of Sandra Mae Frank, this time as a series regular.

Ahead of the upcoming Season 4 finale, TVLine exclusively reported that Frank would be reprising her role as deaf cancer surgeon Dr. Elizabeth Wilder as a promotion to a series regular for New Amsterdam‘s final season. 

New Amsterdam Season 4 Episode 1, “More Joy.” first introduced France as Dr. Elizabeth Wilder. At that time, her character was considered to replace Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) as Deputy Medical Director of New Amsterdam.

Her character was then offered the position of Medical Director, which would have seen her replace Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold). Dr. Wilder subsequently turned down this position. She is now New Amsterdam’s newest Chief of Oncology. 

During Veronica Fuentes’ (Michelle Forbes) reign of terror as Medical Director of New Amsterdam, Frank’s character was instrumental in rallying the staff as part of the “resistance.” 

Since her introduction, Dr. Wilder has become known for her fierce patient advocacy and her deep compassion. She has been an integral part of keeping the New Amsterdam family together while Max and Helen have been in London.

On New Amsterdam Season 4, Episode 17, “Unfinished Business,” Dr. Wilder confronted the man who drugged her and her New Amsterdam colleagues.

She then proudly appeared in public wearing scrubs to support healthcare workers facing harassment during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to her role as Oncology Director extraordinaire, Frank also performed “America The Beautiful” and the National Anthem in American Sign Language during Super Bowl LVI on behalf of the National Association of the Deaf. 

Before her now-starring role in New Amsterdam, Frank appeared in Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Daybreak. 

As New Amsterdam fans approach the season finale of the show’s penultimate season, the fact that we’ll be seeing more of Dr. Wilder is welcome news.
