Supergirl: 15 Things We Want to See in the Final Season
The end has come for another one of the Arrowverse’s original shows. The CW announced that the upcoming Supergirl Season 6, premiering March 30th, would be its last. It’s hard to imagine the Arrowverse without the girl of steel, but six seasons is quite the run for a show that almost didn’t make it to Season 2.
As we prepare to say goodbye to Kara, Alex, J’onn, Lena, and the rest of the gang, it seemed like the perfect time to take stock of all of our hopes for Supergirl’s swan song.
Here are a few things we want to see on Supergirl’s final season:
1. A Focus on Kara

One of the great things about Supergirl is all the amazing characters it’s given us.
Characters who have been groundbreaking and inspiring. Characters who we have fallen in love with and rooted for through all their ups and downs. Characters who should all get the satisfying ending they deserve.
But at the end of the day, the name of the show is Supergirl, and it is Kara’s story. More than anything else, for Season 6 to be successful, it has to keep the focus on her journey and not get bogged down by too many other subplots.
This might mean that some of our favorites get a little less screen time than they would have if this weren’t the last season. It absolutely doesn’t mean that they should be short-shifted with unsatisfying conclusions. It just means that Kara’s journey has to be the priority.
Whatever else happens on Season 6, the heart of the story needs to be about Kara and who she has become since she first saved her sister on the show’s pilot.
2. A Bright Arrowverse Future for Nia

The end of Supergirl doesn’t have to mean it’s the last time we get to see these characters. There is an entire Arrowverse of shows for them to pop up in, including a spinoff from the series itself, Superman and Lois.
It would be fun to see any of the Supergirl characters on other shows, for anything from a cameo to a multi-episode arc. None more so than Nia Nal. Nia is the character best situated to jump to another show, perhaps even becoming a regular on one of them.
She has the most backstory left to reveal and depths left to explore. It’s easy to see her fitting into the tone of the other shows as well. Perhaps the most obvious choice would be Legends of Tomorrow, which would embrace all the geeky exuberance that endeared her to us in the first place.
There are countless places that Nia could fit in as part of the future of the Arrowverse, and hopefully, her story on Supergirl ends in a way that sets that up so we see a lot more of her sooner rather than later.
3. Brainy and Nia Reunited

Speaking of Nia, let’s also address her love life.
Brainy and Dreamer are one of the most charming couples in the Arrowverse. Awkwardly romantic and sweet, watching these two come together during Season 4 was delightful.
In Season 5, however, Brainy broke Nia’s heart when he broke up with her after secretly agreeing to work with Lex Luthor in a misguided attempt to stop what he believed was a bigger threat.
That’s all well and good. It wouldn’t be much of a story if things were always sunshine and lollipops. Angst and drama are part of the deal for most TV ships.
But now, with the show coming to an end, it’s time to get these two beautiful nerds back together.
4. A Strong Ending for Dansen

Another pair that need a happy ending are Alex and Kelly (a.k.a. Dansen). Perhaps happy isn’t quite the right word since when we left them at the end of Season 5, they were already in a good place.
What they really deserve is a strong ending that reinforces that they were the ones meant to be together all along. To do that, we need to revisit Alex’s relationship with Maggie.
As far as unplanned break-ups go on shows, Supergirl actually handled Floriana Lima’s exit pretty well. Sure, Alex’s desire to have kids seems to come out of nowhere, but it is a real conflict that couples face and can be a deal-breaker.
No one died, and while their breakup was heartwrenching, the show approached the end of their relationship with sensitivity and respect. It wasn’t perfect, but given the circumstances, it was pretty darn good.
What we haven’t seen is the type of closure that lets Alex choose Kelly because she is the one that she wants, not because she can’t be with Maggie. Kelly and Alex should both have that certainty by the time the show ends.
The chances of Maggie making an appearance and providing final closure on the Sanvers relationship seem small. Still, hopefully, they find a way to affirm that while Maggie was Alex’s great first love, Kelly is the love she was meant to grow old with.
5. Lots of Screen Time for Kara and Lena

Next to Alex, the most important relationship in Kara’s life is Lena Luthor. Whether you are a Supercorp shipper that wants to see them together as a romantic couple or not, it’s impossible to deny how vital that relationship is for Kara.
At the end of Season 4, two years of Kara lying to Lena about her identity came to a head when Lena learned the truth from her brother Lex. The fallout sent Lena spiraling, and we spent all of Season 5 watching the rift between them grow as Lena’s anger only got deeper.
The pair did finally reconcile on Supergirl Season 5 Episode 19, “Immortal Kombat,” but because COVID shut down production early, it was rushed, and we didn’t get a chance to see them truly repair their relationship.
Going into Season 6 with no more secrets between them and Lena having moved past her anger, we should get to see these two rebuild their relationship and maybe even come out stronger by the end.
6. Cat Grant Cameo

This one is the longest of long shots, but nothing would be more exciting than an appearance by Cat Grant herself, Calista Flockhart.
When Supergirl first premiered on CBS, Cat Grant was a huge and beloved part of the show. When the show moved to The CW, it started filming in Vancouver instead of LA, and Flockhart decided it was best for her to leave the show rather than move to Canada for most of the year to film.
Five seasons later, she remains a fan favorite, and her shoes have never been filled.
It’s doubtful that the show creators will be able to work out an in the flesh appearance from Flockhart, but it doesn’t seem right to end the show without seeing Kara’s first mentor one more time. Even a video call or TV appearance would work to give us a chance to say a proper goodbye to the one and only Ms. Grant.
7. An Update on James

James was a character Supergirl always struggled to find good stories for. During Season 1, he was set up to be a love interest for Kara, but that was abruptly squashed on the Season 2 premiere when Kara decided that after a year of pining for James, she actually just wasn’t that into him after all.
After that, the series never quite figured out what to do with him.
They tried making him the superhero Guardian. They tried having him be a love interest for Lena. Nothing really worked until right before Mehcad Brooks left the show, and we met his sister, Kelly. But by then, it was too late, and James was already on his way out.
James got a pretty solid goodbye and conclusion to his story, and actually bringing him back as a guest star wouldn’t add much to the season or his character, but before the show ends, it would be nice to know what he is up to and how he’s doing.
It would be especially nice for it to involve his sister somehow since we didn’t get much time with them together despite all the potential for that relationship.
8. Keep it Simple

Supergirl tends to take on multiple complicated storylines during the course of a season, particularly when it comes to its villains. Sometimes that results in exciting and unique stories, but other times it makes for a convoluted season that pushes character development to the side.
There is too much to wrap up on Season 6, too many characters’ stories to serve, to let that happen this season.
That’s not to say a compelling antagonist isn’t important, but we don’t need multiple threads to follow or a ton of new characters to get to know. Season 6 needs to be about the characters we know and love.
To do that, there needs to be time and space to focus on them.
Instead, for Season 6, we need a villain who can create high stakes and challenge our heroes emotionally and physically, but not one that requires extensive backstory and explanation. We need a consistent big bad that brings the team together rather than one that sees everyone off chasing their own pieces of the puzzle until the very last minute.
In other words, keep it simple.
9. The Return of M’gann

This is one of those wish list items I feel sure would have happened if the series were ending in a normal year, but might be a long shot under current filming conditions. Let’s ask for it anyway. Please bring M’gann back before the end of the season.
Better yet, have M’gann return to help the team face their final big bad and then fly off with J’onn J’onzz to continue fighting against the White Martians with him by her side. Give J’onn that happy ending.
Even if M’gann can’t actually appear in an episode, J’onn going off to be with her and fighting for his planet would be the perfect conclusion for both characters.
10. An Episode with Eliza

So many of Supergirl’s best episodes have been the ones that involve Eliza. Whether it’s flashbacks to when Kara and Alex were growing up, supporting her daughter when she comes out, or just offering some quiet wisdom in the midst of a storm, Eliza is always a welcomed presence.
It would be lovely to have one more episode with the Danvers family together. Maybe it would be to get some closure after Jeremiah’s death. We got to see Alex grieve but not Eliza. It would be nice to know that she’s going to be ok too.
Or, perhaps we could get an episode where Eliza comes to town to finally get to know Kelly?
Whatever it is that brings her back, we need at least one more scene of Eliza and her daughters.
11. No Love Interest for Kara

One thing Kara does not need this season is a love interest. It seems likely that the will be some attempt at making Kara and William a thing, but the season would be so much better if there isn’t.
They tried in Season 5, and it didn’t work. Trying to force some sort of romance at the end of the series would be a disservice to Kara and any of the characters not getting screen time to make space for that story.
If the show wants to keep William around, that’s ok. William was a perfectly fine addition to the show when working with Kelly to investigate Obsidian North. Let him do more of that. But let’s not pretend that there is any chemistry between Kara and William.
In fact, let’s not have any love interest at all for Kara this season. At this point, it would just be a distraction from the relationships and characters we are already deeply invested in.
Kara never needed a romantic partner to be a compelling character so don’t waste energy on a relationship that is bound to be forgettable and rushed.
12. One Last Scene with Barry

Can we get one more scene between Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin? The shows’ creators seem to think the chances are slim, according to a statement made to TVLine, but let’s put it out into the universe anyway.
Barry and Kara’s friendship is perhaps the purest friendship in the Arrowverse. How could the bond between these two idealistic beacons of hope be anything less?
As we say goodbye to the characters and relationships we love from the show, it would be wonderful to give these two friends a chance to say goodbye too. Even if it’s just a quick check-in, all we want is one more scene with Benoist and Gustin’s easy chemistry and playful energy.
If we can’t get Barry, though, maybe another scene between Alex and Sara Lance instead?
13. Alex and J’onn Bonding

Alex may have lost her father but she still has J’onn J’onzz, the person who has been her mentor and surrogate father most of her adult life. Hopefully, there will be plenty of opportunity for the show to remind us how important they are to each other during Season 6.
J’onn and Alex’s relationship is one of the most touching and enduring of the series.
Scenes between David Harewood and Chyler Leigh always feel special. The two of them have created something heartfelt and meaningful, and Season 6 should honor what the writers and these two talented actors have built.
They should get a conclusion worthy of the beautiful bond that we’ve watched grow since Season 1.
14. The Danvers Sisters Being a Priority

The Danvers sisters are and have always been the heart and soul of Supergirl. The show is at its best when it remembers that.
They ground the show emotionally, and whenever the series loses sight of that, the quality suffers because of it. A good Danvers sisters scene can salvage even the worst episodes and make good episodes exceptional.
When it comes down to it, there are only two things on this list that will make or break Supergirl’s final season: keeping things focused on Kara and making sure her relationship with her sister is the center of the season.
After the show ends, we won’t think about that really cool villain. We won’t remember what plan they came up with to save the world. We will think about how Alex and Kara fought for each other, and we’ll remember is how we felt watching these two sisters sitting on the couch eating pizza.
15. A Happy Ending

Not every ending has to be a happy ending, but Supergirl’s ending does. Supergirl is a show about hope and idealism, and an ending that is not aspirational or optimistic undermines everything the series has championed during its run.
We’ve seen The CW take the bittersweet route to ending one of its Arrowverse shows before when they killed off Oliver Queen during Arrow’s last season. That was a polarizing decision all its own, but whatever you think of Oliver’s death, that at least it made sense within the scope of the show’s darker themes and more cynical tone.
That is not the story Supergirl has been telling for the last 5 seasons.
Supergirl isn’t a show we tune into for poetically tragic or ambiguous heroes. We tune into Supergirl to lift our spirits and maybe even chase away a little bit of our pessimism. That’s where the show started, and that is exactly the feeling we should have when it ends.

No to Nia joining the Legends. One of the things they made a point of in season 5 was that she was a symbol for the transgender community. Putting her on the Waverider would be a huge mistake as that would remove the visible reminder for transgender people that she’s out there fighting for them. Traveling through time, they won’t be able to see her at all. Besides, Legends is ending next season. The best move would be to give her her own show.
