10 TV Angels We Love To Death (And 6 We Absolutely Hate)
The angels we regularly see portrayed on TV are, more often than not, a significant deviation from how they are supposed to be in the scriptural sense. This has done wonders, giving us more drama and exponentially better TV.
We have put together a list of these angelic creatures. Some of the angels have used their powers for good, and others have done nothing but make one questionable decision after another. Read on to see who made the cut!
First up, let’s take a look at the angels we love:
1. Lucifer Morningstar (Lucifer)

Lucifer has come a long way since his days — a few thousand millennia back — spent trying to overthrow his father. He’s fallen in love, become an uncle, and learned some invaluable lessons about self-awareness, which is something he was painfully short on when we first met him on Lucifer.
Even though he still has some emotional ground to cover, his willingness to grow is an admirable quality in anybody — angel or not.
2. Waverly Earp (Wynonna Earp)

You’d be hard-pressed to find a character anywhere on TV who’s as relentlessly good and pure as Waverly Earp.
This is why, in hindsight, the reveal that she is 50% angel made total sense. Technically, that makes her a Nephilim, if we’re going to be pedantic about it, but since Wynonna Earp has stuck to the angel label, so are we.
Besides, having angel blood doesn’t mean you come with a locked-in moral compass that perpetually points towards good. That is all Waverly’s doing.
3. Aziraphale (Good Omens)

We’re pretty sure if Good Omens’ Aziraphale had his way, he’ll be in his bookstore sipping tea with his bestie Crowley. Alas, heaven is hellbent (get it?!) on seeing the apocalypse come to pass.
Despite the opposition he faced from virtually every angel and demon (save for Crowley), he pushed back against the overly bureaucratic host of heaven until he successfully put paid to their world-ending plans.
4. Eliza Hunter (Miracle Workers)

Despite being placed very far down the pecking order, and getting shunted to the almost defunct department of prayer-answering, nothing could kill Eliza’s enthusiasm for the job. She immediately sought to revamp the highly understaffed department to some considerable success.
That persistent optimism is what helped her win a bet against God, getting him to spare our tiny little planet from its planned destruction. For that we are eternally grateful.
5. Sabrina Spellman (Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina)

Another half-angel who has wormed her way into our hearts by being kind and willing to selflessly throw herself in harm’s way to protect her friends and family. It’s a shame the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will end with part 4, and now we won’t get to see Sabrina grow into her powers beyond the fourth season.
And judging by the fact that her father — Lucifer, a sole fallen angel — can singlehandedly fuel the magic of thousands of witches across generations, there really is no telling what the ceiling is on her potential.
6. Joe Strong (Midnight Texas)

Midnight Texas’ Joe is a fallen angel who found his soulmate in Chuy, a demon. True to his infernal heritage, Chuy was susceptible to the occasional outburst of homicidal rage. Yet, Joe’s love never wavered.
His soft-spoken nature often belies the fact that he is probably Midnight’s most powerful resident, which is no mean feat considering the diverse collection of supernatural creatures that call the tiny town of Midnight home.
Plus, he’s always there to lend a hand whenever the gang gets itself into a bind, which is quite often.
7. Castiel (Supernatural)

Cas has gone through quite a transformation on Supernatural: from the stoic, no-nonsense emissary of God that we were introduced to when he, to paraphrase his words, “raised Dean from perdition,” to the fish out of water moments that had us belly laughing.
Hell, Castiel had a brief stint as a villain after he let his own hubris get to his head, but even then, Cas’ light wasn’t dimmed in our eyes. Not one bit.
8. Azrael (Lucifer)

We know of another one of Lucifer’s siblings who could’ve easily made it onto this list, but when faced with a choice between the two, Azrael edged out Amenadiel by a hair’s breadth on account of just how damn likable she is.
When she made her appearance on Lucifer Season 3, Azrael was at first thought to only be Ella’s ghost friend Ray-Ray. It turned out she was something much more than that.
When she realized hanging around Ella wasn’t worth the havoc it was wreaking on Ella’s life, she carefully nudged her in Lucifer’s direction, knowing her brother would be a good friend and look out for Ella in her absence.
9. Yvette (Kevin Probably Saves The World)

Yvette’s presence in Kevin’s life was, at first, nothing more than a huge nuisance. But as Kevin warmed up to her, so did we.
Over the course of their time together, she proved to be an invaluable source of help and direction as he embarked on his mission to locate other righteous souls. In turn, she got to discover the simple joys of human life through him.
10. Gabriel (Supernatural)

Among all the angels of the supernatural world, none proved as able to cut loose and enjoy the pleasures of human life quite like Gabriel on Supernatural. Masquerading as a trickster to play pranks on Sam and Dean for his amusement, Gabriel also imparted vital life lessons at crucial moments in the brothers’ journey.
Gabriel has had an undeniably positive influence on the Winchesters. Also, who can forget the time he produced and starred in his own adult movie, which he left for the gang as a goodbye letter.
And here are the 6 angels we hate:
1. Fiore (Preacher)

Fiore and DeBlanc’s incompetence was the, well…genesis of every messed up thing Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy went through on Preacher. A particularly dumb attempt at rectifying their huge misstep led to the Saint of Killers being set free and roaming the earth once again.
The loss of his partner sank him into a life of sadness and hedonism before he was finally put out of his misery but not before sticking it to the clergyman and his friends by selling them out to the same killer who had murdered DeBlanc.
2. Santa Muerte (Penny Dreadful: City Of Angels)

Santa Muerte is one character whose true nature can only be described as angel-ish — neither a full-blown goddess nor strictly an avatar.
Regardless, her existence in the overarching storyline of Penny Dreadful: City of Angels proved to be pointless, or at best, negligible in its impact. She stood by and did nothing whilst her demonic sister’s reign of terror went unchecked.
And the few times she did appear, it was to berate her worshipers who dared to question her inaction. If the show had some kind of plan for her or not is something we’ll never get to know now that the show has been axed.
3. Raphael (Hex)

If the creepy, sexist dating advice Raphael gave Leon, or the ruthlessness with which he treated everyone around him, was the only stick we had to beat him with then, he probably wouldn’t have made the cut.
However, he took it a dozen steps further by trying to rape Ella, who he had taken under his wing and mentored up until that point. His unceremonious exit was certainly fitting for a terrible character as he was.
4. Gabriel (Dominion)

Extreme daddy issues are traditionally reserved for Lucifer, but not in this case.
On Dominion, Gabriel takes on crybaby duty. And when an archangel throws a tantrum because he misses daddy, we get the post-apocalyptic wastelands we see in this short-lived show, with every dark corner stalked by “8-balls” — lesser angels who joined Gabriel’s crusade.
By the time we catch up with the events in Vega, Gabriel and his army had laid waste to the vast majority of the human population with the total extermination mankind his end goal. A genocidal angel? No thanks!
5. Metatron (Supernatural)

Cowardly and arrogant in equal measure, Metatron was largely responsible for the expulsion of the angels from heaven which led to the decimation of the angels’ population. All because he felt ostracized by the other angels way back when heaven used to be the place to be.
Seeing him get blown to bits by Amara was kind of a bittersweet experience because, while it’s a shame to lose a great actor such as Curtis Armstrong, we’re not sad to see the character go.
6. Michael (Lucifer)

Lucifer Season 5 Part 1 introduced us to Michael With the recent revelation that he may or may not be the orchestrator of the entire catalog of Lucifer’s greatest hits: the rebellion, Lucifer’s tryst with Eve in the garden, all of it — it’s no wonder why he ended up on our list of angels we hate.
To see Michael try to so callously pry our favorite devil’s sense of self-determination from him just to soothe his own petulance is rage-inducing.
