18 Times Lucifer was the Best Character on ‘Supernatural’

Lists, Pinned, Supernatural

The character of Lucifer on Supernatural has always been equal parts menacing and annoyingly humorous. To be honest, that coupled with the perfect casting of Mark Pellegrino, is what makes this character so much fun to watch.

Even when donning the face of someone else, Lucifer proves to be the one character to keep us entertained and on our toes. It could even be argued that he is one of the best characters, outside of our lovely trio of heroes of course.

In case it isn’t obvious, spoilers are ahead — so proceed with caution. Here are the best Lucifer moments from Supernatural, in no particular order.

1. Lucifer escapes his cage.

Luciferbeginning

This is our first time ever meeting Lucifer. First impressions are definitely strong with him. He proves just how twisted, manipulative, and sadistic he can be through his actions to convince Nick to be his vessel. Up to this point in the series, we had only heard talk of Lucifer, and we weren’t fully aware of his capabilities.

That being said, this introductory moment also shows us the darker, more serious side of Pellegrino’s portrayal of such an iconic character. He proves himself a worthy force to be reckoned with through his nuanced performance of going from human soul to vessel for Satan himself.

What a way to ring in the show’s fifth season.

2. Lucifer summons Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The show’s fifth season is one of the most exciting ones due largely in part to Lucifer. He creates the perfect antagonist for the brothers. A perfect foil if you will.

At this point in the show, the formula needs to be switched up a bit. Why not have the devil himself always two steps ahead of the brothers in the quest for the apocalypse. Lucifer wants the apocalypse to happen, and for the brothers to be the front-runners of it.

Meanwhile, Sam and Dean are trying their best to stay ahead of the game and stop the four horsemen from succeeding in their goals. It’s hard to do when Lucifer is besting them by summoning Death, one of the horsemen.

This is all in an effort to get Sam to say yes to him. He needs Sam in order to stay a corporeal human on earth. The devil clearly knows that Sam will never agree to it unless it’s his only hope. That is why he summons Death.

If Sam’s family and loved ones are in danger, Lucifer knows he will say yes.

3. Lucifer makes Crowley his pet.

This one takes us to Supernatural Season 11. Lucifer finds out that Crowley has taken over Hell and he’s not happy, to say the least. Lucifer reminds Crowley of his place in the most demeaning, yet hilarious, way possible. He makes Crowley his dog.

This is one of the few times we ever see Crowley lowered to this level and part of us wants to feel sorry for him, but Lucifer’s way of doing it makes the moment comical. Part of what makes this even more entertaining is Castiel being Lucifer’s vessel during it all.

This shows that the former king of hell can be equal parts menacing and funny. Lucifer likes to laugh just as much as he likes to inflict pain.

4. Possessing Castiel

While we are talking about Lucifer using Castiel as a vessel we have to mention the moment Crowley and Rowena discover it. Up to this point, they have only known him to wear the face of Mark Pellegrino.

Misha Collins taking over the iconic role could either be really great or miss the mark entirely. However, from some of his first moments, Collins/Cas shows fans that he can handle the role with the ease and comic goodness known to Cas.

Misha manages to balance out who Lucifer is as “Satan” while adding a new spin to him. The light-heartedly cruel side of Lucifer really starts to come out while in the Cas meat suit. It would be fun to see Lucifer possess Cas again, just for the twisted version he is when Misha plays him.

5. Staging a corporate coup in Heaven

Who doesn’t love a little chaos? Lucifer loves it when he can stir things up and throw everyone off their game.

While still possessing Castiel, Lucifer uses the vessel to get back into Heaven. Castiel still gets mixed reactions from the angels in heaven. However, the impending Darkness changes everything.

Somehow, Lucifer is able to use his skills of persuasion and manipulation to turn all the angels in heaven away from their allegiance to follow him into battle. The fact that Lucifer is able to pose as Castiel successfully enough to convince even the highest level of angels is what makes him such a complex and intricately interesting character.

It’s kind of funny that Lucifer is the leader of the angel rebellion. It’s even funnier because he is posing as Castiel, who would not likely lead such a rebellion. (He would let someone else lead while he assists.)

Lucifer being very Satan-like while looking clean-cut is a perfect metaphor for life. Villains in reality rarely look much different from you or me, and Lucifer proves that.

Underneath it all, Supernatural is all about family ties. Nothing shows that more than the Season 5 finale; when Lucifer wants to cause an apocalypse in order to show his older brother, Michael, that he is the better of the two.

By convincing Sam to be his vessel for this final battle makes the moment a double whammy of family ties. It’s not just Lucifer and Michael battling it out, but also Sam and his brother Adam. The original intention for this fight was Dean to be Michael’s vessel, which frankly would have been more interesting.

Jared Padalecki ends up being the first major character to be possessed by Lucifer. He does a good job in what is arguably the best/most important episode of the whole series.

Lucifer may be all huff and puff, but deep down, he’s just a son who feels slighted by his father in the love department. Sound familiar?
