15 Reasons You Should Be Watching ‘Schitt’s Creek’
The word “underrated” gets thrown around a lot, (in fact, I would even go as far to say it is overrated) but Schitt’s Creek is definitely an underrated comedy.
With three seasons streaming on Netflix, the fourth on its way (or in reruns for you lucky Canadians), and the fifth in production, now is a great time to get acquainted with this delightfully charming series.
Here are 15 reasons you should be watching Schitt’s Creek:
1. It’s a Family Affair
The co-creators of Schitt’s Creek are father and son, Eugene Levy and Dan Levy. They also happen to star as father and son on the show.
Sarah Levy, Eugene Levy’s daughter and Dan Levy’s sister, is a part of the cast as Schitt’s Creek resident, Twyla Sands. Fred Levy, Eugene Levy’s brother, is a producer. The show centers around the Rose family, and it has a strong familial backing behind the scenes, as well.
2. Dan Levy as David Rose
While all the characters are hilarious, David stands out with his signature style and priceless facial expressions. He also makes simple phrases like “Oh my God” and “Okay” so funny and nuanced that it boggles the mind. It’s an (amazing) ensemble cast, but Dan Levy really feels like the heart of the show, on screen as David and off as the fearless leader.
3. LGBTQ+ Representation
On Schitt’s Creek Season 1 Episode 10, “Honeymoon,” it is revealed that David is pansexual. The way he describes it to Stevie highlights the superb writing on the show and makes it easy to understand for viewers who might not be familiar with that term. Gay romance is given a good amount of screen time as well as meaningful plot development, which leads me to the next reason on this list.
But, one quick side note: the cast and crew of Schitt’s Creek came together and marched in Toronto’s Pride Parade wearing shirts that quote the show, “Into the wine not the label.”
4. A Queer Ship
On Schitt’s Creek Season 3 Episode 8, “Motel Review,” David meets Patrick. They become business partners, and some real promising interactions take place between them.
Seriously, it’s the stuff dream ships are made of, and by the end of the third season it’s difficult not to jump aboard. The shipper writing this has high hopes for them in Season 4.
5. The Fashions
The Rose family has expensive taste in clothes, and they keep up appearances while living in the small, rural town of Schitt’s Creek. Fashion is important to each and every one of them, and they express themselves with aplomb.
Moira is the most flamboyant of the bunch, and adds a touch of theatrics with her ever-changing rotations of wigs, but the kids, David and Alexis, have their own unique flair, too.
David sticks with black and white, but his monochromatic style is anything but boring. Alexis looks like she’s on her way to Coachella most of the time with bohemian, flowy dresses, floppy hats, and feathers—having to wear scrubs for her job takes some serious adjusting for the fashionista.
Johnny’s wardrobe is nothing to scoff at, though he is the most reserved out of the four of them. Impeccably tailored suits make up the patriarch’s closet.
6. The “Fold In The Cheese” Scene
I have gotten friends to watch the series based on showing them just this clip alone. Since Schitt’s Creek is a story about a rich family—who have had everything done for them—now having to fend for themselves in normal, everyday life situations, this scene from Schitt’s Creek Season 2 Episode 2, “Family Dinner,” wholly contains that theme and their struggle.
The comedic genius of both Dan Levy and Catherine O’Hara shines in this domestic setting, and it also portrays their quirky mother-son relationship well.
7. Catherine O’Hara as Moira Rose
Moira is an actress of stage and screen, and best known for her role as Vivian Blake on the daytime soap opera, Sunrise Bay. She can often come off as patronizing, but she is full of wisdom and charm.
O’Hara makes what could be an unlikable character utterly lovable with her spot-on delivery and timing. In practically every episode she exhibits what the youths call “Mood” energy, and is highly relatable.
8. Alexis says “David”
Whether it is preceded by an “Ew!” or just a simple whine of his name, Alexis saying “David” is a fun part of every episode.
You wouldn’t think saying the same person’s name over and over could take on so many connotations, but Annie Murphy as Alexis Rose manages to do just that, and make it absolutely hilarious each way and each time.
