Slo Pitch: Crave Shares First Look at Sapphic Softball Comedy

Slo Pitch is stepping up to the plate, and sooner than you may think!

Canadian streamer Crave hit a home run earlier this year when it introduced the world to Jacob Tierney’s adaptation of Heated Rivalry. Now, Crave will keep the ball rolling with Slo Pitch, a much-anticipated series following the members of a Queer beer league.

The half-hour mockumentary-style comedy will take to the field with a two-episode series premiere on Friday, September 25, followed by weekly episode releases.

The first season will consist of ten episodes and air exclusively on Crave in Canada.

Additionally, Bell Media has revealed that Slo Pitch has been acquired by Sky UK and Ireland, Sky New Zealand, and HBO Max in Australia. There are currently no plans to bring the show to the United States.

The Mississauga-set comedy follows The Brovaries, a struggling softball team in an LGBTQ+ beer league. When the team’s coach, Joanne Pico (Jess Salgueiro), is dumped by long-time girlfriend Leanne and forced to watch her ex defect to a rival team, she wants nothing more than to win.

There’s just one problem. The Brovaries are a dysfunctional mess and last place in their amateur league.

With a determination that could rival Parks and Recreation‘s Leslie Knope, Joanne attempts to whip the underdog team into shape for a championship run. This comedic celebration of Queer characters swings for the fences as Season 1 navigates conservative sponsors and sexy fundraising tactics gone wrong.

Slo Pitch promises even more heated rivalries as Joanne’s pursuit of greatness for her team leads to strikeouts on the mound and love in the dugout.

Created by J Stevens, Karen Knox, and Gwenlyn Cumyn, the 2020 web series turned streaming show follows in the footsteps of Crave Original hits like Letterkenny.

The cast of misfit players joining Salgueiro includes Knox as Boris, Cumyn as Ann, Chelsea Muirhead as Sasha, Emma Hunter as Barb, Lane Webber as Lee, Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah as Zari, and Amanda Cordner as Mel.

The show will also feature Schitt’s Creek’s Emily Hampshire as Leanne, and professional softball player Ayami Sato.

Slo Pitch is co-produced by Bell Media and actor Elliot Page’s Pageboy Productions, as part of a development deal to spotlight original stories on Canadian broadcast and streaming. However, with many Canada-made series finding success internationally on Hulu, AMC, The CW, and HBO Max, the impact of this deal could span much further.

Whether you enjoy the comedic stylings of Shoresy or despise the premature cancellations of Pitch and A League of Their Own, this latest sports-centric series offers two things we all can get behind: baseball and beer.

Slo Pitch premieres Friday, September 25 on Crave.
