20 Sci-fi and Fantasy TV Shows We Loved in 2017

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., American Gods, Best of 2017, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Killjoys, Lists, Once Upon a Time, Orphan Black, Shadowhunters, Star Trek: Discovery, Stranger Things, Teen Wolf, The 100, The Magicians

SHADOWHUNTERS – (Freeform/John Medland) DOMINIC SHERWOOD, EMERAUDE TOUBIA, KATHERINE MCNAMARA, MATTHEW DADDARIO

The television adaptation of Shadowhunters was a love letter to fans of the book series it was based on in the first season, but this year, it learned to lean into the benefits of being a television show.

Breathing room for love stories outside of the main love triangle and departures from the book helped the second season. The complex supernatural world of the series was great because it focused on all its characters.

8. Wynonna Earp

Built on a foundation of well-crafted characters, mainly a set of great sisters, Wynonna Earp is sci-fi escapism as its finest. In the second season, the series mined all of the characters viewers met and loved in the first as well as flesh out the world of demons and government agencies. It’s gun-slinging, demon-fighting fun!

9. Orphan Black

Orphan Black Season 5 Episode 10 – Sarah (Tatiana Maslany), Helena (Tatiana Maslany), Cosima (Tatiana Maslany), and Alison (Tatiana Maslany)

The phenomenal BBC American series hurdled toward a climactic finish as it pushed its science a little closer to fiction. Orphan Black always did its best when it dove deep into the science and focused on the sisters at the center of it, which the final did exceptionally well. It was great to see Tatiana Maslany play the various clones one more time.

ONCE UPON A TIME – (ABC/Jack Rowand) DANIA RAMIREZ, ANDREW J. WEST, LANA PARRILLA, MEKIA COX, COLIN O’DONOGHUE

After closing a magical journey six seasons in the making, Once Upon a Time rebooted the series. With the new adventure, characters like Tiana and Cinderella got their time in the spotlight. Most importantly, where Snow White and Prince Charming’s family led the first adventure, this time fan favorite Regina gets to finish out her hero arc.

After years of exploring the supernatural world, Teen Wolf entered its final batch of episodes by delving into the everyday human’s respond to the supernatural. The harsh realities of what people really think greatly impacted the characters and resented with viewers. It was a great way to end a journey that began with teens stumbling into the world of werewolves and banshees.

What follows is a bonkers, crass, and hilariously fun ride. Future Man is Josh Hutcherson and Eliza Coupe at their best.

  • That´s quite a few shows, there. My favourite science fiction shows during 2017 were: Travelers, Legion, Incorporated, Dark Matter, The Expanse, Westworld (rewatched it), Mr Robot and Humans.

I must admit I like Game of Thrones on your list. But I do miss some of the ones I mention, at least for a 20 best shows of Sci-Fi & Fantasy.
