Three strangers come together to travel through time to stop a mad man? Timeless started with a great premise and became a solid television show.

The characters are fully realized, the team dynamic is strong, the times they traveled to were fascinating and the twists were shocking. Luckily the series, which was initially canceled, is returning for a second round.

14. The Magicians

When Syfy series The Magicians ended its first season it took its characters to the magical land of Fillory, turning the magic and adventure up a notch for its second season. Now a somewhat-solid family unit, the characters fought hard to find a way to take down their enemy. The season, like the first, was also fun, raunchy and unique.

15. Star Trek: Discovery

After a pilot that felt like a traditional Star Trek episode, the series took a major shift in its second episode with mutineer Michael Burnham. A move that made Star Trek: Discovery stand out and also kicked off an exhilarating season. It a more complex Star Trek full of uncertainty, which feels current and exciting.

With a higher awareness of their powers and a strong bond between them, the characters of Sense8 delivered a powerful second season.

Watching the eight very different characters connect and fight for one another while miles apart is the unique family unit a science fiction or fantasy series can only provide. This is a series we’re definitely going to miss.

17. Agents of SHIELD

Androids and an alternate reality made the fourth season of Agents of SHIELD one of its best. Veering away from the superhero tent poles and embracing the science fiction has always been the drama’s strong suit. The fifth season, which recently began, takes the team to the future and space for the first time – literally taking the story into new heights.

After being dropped out of the sky to survive on Earth, the characters of The 100 faced the end of the world again.

No maneuvering or plan was going to stop it, so the series was incredibly compelling as the characters made the toughest calls. The 100 Season 4 ended with a huge time jump and a shuffling of the characters, setting up a highly anticipated fifth season.

  • That´s quite a few shows, there. My favourite science fiction shows during 2017 were: Travelers, Legion, Incorporated, Dark Matter, The Expanse, Westworld (rewatched it), Mr Robot and Humans.

I must admit I like Game of Thrones on your list. But I do miss some of the ones I mention, at least for a 20 best shows of Sci-Fi & Fantasy.
