School Spirits Season 3 Episode 5 Review: Raiders of the Lost Scar

Reviews

The unknown can terrify, but the known can devastate. School Spirits Season 3 Episode 5, “Raiders of the Lost Scar,” dives deeper into the mysteries surrounding the school. We learn the hauntings are far darker and more sinister

This Paramount Plus series has already done scary and spooky well. Nonetheless, it keeps the scares to a minimum and focuses more on the characters.  It’s a character-driven series.

“Raiders of the Lost Scar” turns the show quite dark with ghosts that are actually frightening. School Spirits succeeds at making Wally, Rhonda, and Charley very likable. You almost forget that they’re ghosts.

They’re friendly ghosts.

The juxtaposition between these ghosts and the children with white eyes adds terror to the show. In Season 3, School Spirits starts to feel more like a haunting story than just a paranormal drama.

Season 2 is darker than Season 1, but Season 3 may be the darkest of them all. The series accomplishes many admirable things in the second season, including things that remind us of the show’s tribute to the horror movie genre.

However, Season 3 allows the show to reach a new level of demented. It’s still a mainly PG-13 version of a horror show, but no one could have predicted it would reach this level of frightening storylines.

It has become bolder with age. The ghosts are scary, but the danger of losing our favorite spirits is traumatic.

We learn that Wally, Rhonda, Charley, and others may have to go to an even worse version of the afterworld. It’s starting to feel like a major battle of good and evil in the School Spirits world.

This gives reminiscences of classic paranormal horror shows, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Everything feels so elevated to a grand scale that it didn’t in the previous two seasons. Things are now life or death.

This TV show has been a great watch from the start. However, each season things heighten in a more impressive way than the previous season. Along with all the ghost stuff, we do experience some more character development.

Simon leads in “Raiders of the Lost Scar.” We learn more about his adoption, family, and what happened to his birth parents. This explains a lot about why Simon is so intense about his relationship with Maddie.

The fear of abandonment must run deep within him. Starting to go deeper into Simon’s past has shown how little we know about most of the human characters. We know the basics of their lives, but not nearly as much as we know about the ghosts.

We learn their tragic backstories in the first two seasons. Now, it’s time we explore more of Claire, Simon, Xavier, and Nicole’s scars.

“Raiders of the Lost Scar” shows a lot of potential for the evolution of School Spirits. We may go dark and more in-depth with these characters. It’s making the season even more exciting.

Stray Thoughts
  • I knew we were headed down a path of potential romantic complications with Xavier and Maddie. I am surprised he still may have romantic feelings for her.
  • Claire’s new hair confused me at first, but it is pretty.
  • Mr. Martin has not completely convinced me of his reformed ways. I am still waiting for his next betrayal.
  • Quinn and Rhonda’s moment is very cute.
  • I love the introduction of another body switch storyline. Can’t wait to see how this plays out.
