Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Reviews

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Episode 8, “The Fleece Works Its Magic Too Well,” feels like late nights under the covers with a flashlight and one of Rick Riordan’s books.

It’s childhood whimsy, with a theatrical brutality and booming score that pulses with the energy of The Hunger Games adaptations. Ultimately, it’s the soaring, giddy feeling of finally watching those “big moments” from the books come to life visually.

Percy Jackson transports us straight into the pages of its source material with a hopeful and heart-pounding confusion.

The season finale reads like a Greek myth with over-the-top battles, heroic declarations, and unwavering hope that good will prevail.

Its action is all high-stakes brutality, indulging in slicing wounds that establish that crucial transition from camp games to the Battle of Camp Half-Blood. The hand-to-hand combat is chaos and congestion, with bodies flying everywhere as Luke and Percy face each other down.

Throw in heartpounding chariot rescues and a shocking Thalia Grace return, and the battle is brought to life with all the gusto we crave from the amour-clad demigods.

It is challenging to give stakes to child-on-child violence without inducing graphic violence. Somehow, Percy Jackson toes the line expertly to provide us with depth and delicacy in the matter.

The finale mobilizes everyone expertly, creating a collage of emotional and fun character interactions that leave no arc unturned. It truly feels like this camp of demigods is a fully fleshed-out entity operating within this fictional world.

This season, Clarisse has been an exceptional demonstration of character growth. Annabeth has been a force with Percy by her side. Additionally, Tyson has given us some of the best performances despite having to perform with a CGI eye. And Luke is breaking our hearts more than he ever did in the books.

These young actors continue to push themselves to a high standard of performance that delivers entertainment, fun, and the occasional gutpunch.

From hero arcs to brewing romances, the Percy Jackson ensemble is one of the strongest on TV right now. One cannot wait to see where they take these characters next after nailing this season’s most significant book moments.

Are there changes to Sea of Monsters that did not work this season? For sure! However, Thalia’s origin story is not one of them because somehow the show has found a way to make her tragedy even more unsettling.

First off, using the book events as a red herring to shock us with a different outcome is downright diabolical.

By changing Zeus’ motives for turning Thalia into a tree from pity to punishment, it elevates her story. Also, Zeus’ actions were always questionable in the books, so this choice only proves his true disconnect from humanity.

Punishing Thalia adds a devastating layer to the disdain between demigod and godly parents festering in every corner of this story.

Previously, we could be confident that Thalia would put Annabeth and the other demigods before defying her father. Now, it would be entirely justifiable for her to want to become a weapon against her father. It brews an appropriate amount of tension for that final standoff between Percy and Thalia, with new uncertainty driving her motives.

We don’t always need tragedy in our stories, especially when it’s children whose lives are on the line. So, despite the potential to look weak, Percy Jackson braves the format of its middle-grade novels and ensures everyone gets a traditional happy ending of some sort.

This season’s conclusion rewards our heroes with much-needed rest and celebration while keeping the unresolved conflict close by.

It’s comforting to see Clarisse’s new friendships save her in the end, leading to the reformed bully getting a new leadership role within the camp.

Plus, the trio getting to savour a rare moment of peace as they laugh at each other’s jokes and bask in the familiarity of their friendship is lovely after a season spent apart.

Ultimately, it’s relieving to see the adaptation champion a classic battle of good and evil where the good prevails, and everyone miraculously heals. Sometimes, the power of friendship and a win for the good guys is just what we need.
