What to Expect from Doc Season 2 Episode 2: Delusions of Grandeur

Doc, Previews

Felicity Huffman joins the cast on Doc Season 2 Episode 2, “Delusions of Grandeur.”

Doc returns to its regular Tuesday time slot after a brief excursion to Sunday for its Season 2 premiere on September 14. While the time slot is familiar, “Delusions of Grandeur” is about to shake things up for Doctor Larsen and the entire Westside staff.

“Delusions of Grandeur” marks the first appearance of Huffan’s character, Dr. Joan Ridley. As we’ve seen in the preview material, Ridley joins Westside as the new Chief of Internal Medicine.

However, it’s more complicated than a new personality shaking up established dynamics. Amy and Joan have a long history together already. Joan is a former mentor to Amy. Someone she considers a friend.

A friend becoming your boss is always tricky territory to navigate, and Amy’s memory situation won’t make things any easier.

The Season 2 trailer hints that Joan and Amy’s relationship won’t be smooth sailing from the start. The question remains, though, whether Joan is someone Amy can ultimately trust. Or, will we be replacing one adversarial Chief with another for Season 2?

Elsewhere on the episode, Amy continues to regain memories as she treats a pregnant woman with mysterious complications.

Here’s everything you need to know about this episode, including the air date, cast, promo, and how to watch.

What Happened on the Previous Episode?

Previously on DocAmy’s past once again comes back to haunt her. Her patient on Doc Season 1 Episode 1, “Her Heart,” is a young woman with a heart condition and a distraught father desperate to save his daughter.

This case likely would have been challenging for Amy, regardless, given that Amy’s son died of a heart condition. However, things get much more complicated than that very quickly.

As it turns out, the young woman was a patient Amy treated six years ago. She was at the top of the list for a heart transplant when one became available. In a flashback, we see Amy talking to the father, trying to convince him not to do the transplant.

What she doesn’t say and what we don’t learn until close to the end of the episode is that the reason she tried to talk the father out of getting the transplant is that she saw signs that it wouldn’t work and would actually lead to complications that would kill the girl sooner than the condition itself.

Amy decides not to tell the father that his daughter’s case was hopeless, not wanting to take their hope away and have death hanging over them for the little time they had left. She knew at the time that eventually this would come back and the father would be furious with her.

He would blame her for talking them out of the transplant when they had the chance at one, without knowing that his daughter would never have been a viable candidate for a transplant.

That’s precisely what happens. Amy, of course, doesn’t remember any of this when the girl returns, once again at the top of the transplant list and with a heart available. She also doesn’t initially see what past Amy saw about the case.

She doesn’t know why she talked the father out of the transplant six years ago and has no explanation for him.

When it looks like his daughter is going to lose another chance at a new heart, the father takes drastic action and takes Amy, Dr. Maitra, and Nurse Julie hostage to try and force the hospital to give his daughter the heart.

In the process of taking over the hospital, he also shoots and almost kills TJ.

After a long, tense standoff, the truth comes out. The man stands down, placated by Jake’s explanation, which vouches for Amy’s intentions, and Amy’s appeals to the father to spend his last moments of his daughter’s life with her, not threatening innocent people.

Elsewhere on the episode, Michael’s wife gives birth to their baby, further distancing Amy and Michael. Amy also makes a decision.

During the standoff with the father, Amy regains the memory of why she didn’t tell him his daughter’s case was hopeless.

After thinking about how her missing memories hindered her ability to respond to the situation and frustrated with the way not having those memories is keeping her from moving on, she tells Gina that she wants to start a dangerous new treatment to regain her memories.

Now that she knows it might be possible to force her memories back, she doesn’t want to wait, despite Gina’s warnings and hesitations.
