Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 9 Review: Spin a Yarn, Get Stuck in Your Own String
Chicago Med Season 9 has successfully been introducing several cases per episode, ensuring they all get the screen time and the resolution they deserve. The same happens on Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 9, “Spin a Yarn, Get Stuck in Your Own String.”
On “Spin a Yarn, Get Stuck in Your Own String,” Marcel deals with the aftermath of Zola’s suspension, Abrams deals with DCFS, Ripley thinks about the lawsuit, and Goodwin worries about Bert’s diagnosis.
Each instance reminds us why these doctors are the best at what they do. Not only are they prepared to do their jobs, but they care about each patient and give them the treatment they deserve no matter who they are or what is happening.
Marcel Goes The Extra Mile

This episode clearly shows that Zola’s suspension is weighing Marcel down. He feels responsible for her actions and now wants to ensure that no one makes any mistakes under his watch.
As much as we can understand where he is coming from, we don’t agree with his methods. He is forcing Kai to push himself harder than he already does simply because Marcel feels guilty about Zola.
He should have kept a closer eye on Zola, knowing who she was and how reckless she was. But, as Maggie says, he isn’t responsible for her actions. Zola was told what not to do, and she went ahead and did it regardless.
Again, Maggie proves exactly why she is in charge of the ED. She sees everything that goes on, understands the doctors, and is able to confront them when they make mistakes.
Even if she has struggled in her personal life, she has always shown up for the ED, giving the best of herself and keeping the department functioning properly.
Parenting is Never Easy

Truth be told, Archer was probably not everyone’s favorite character when he first joined Chicago Med. He was mean, didn’t treat the other doctors with respect, and thought he was better than everyone.
However, he has had one of the best character developments we have seen on the show. In part, he owes that to Asher and the way in which she pushed past his walls and got to know him. Their friendship helped him come out of his shell.
His relationship with Sean is the other aspect of his life that helped him grow. By fixing that broken bond, Archer fixed a part of himself that helped him become a better doctor and person.
Even if he has grown and his relationship with his son is better, he questions his parenting skills on Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 9, “Spin a Yarn, Get Stuck in Your Own String.” After lying to Margo about something related to Sean, he falls back into the doubts he used to have about himself as a father.
Once more, Asher helps him see beyond his doubts. This helps him be honest with Margo, and their relationship grows stronger.

Because he second-guesses himself, Archer also second-guesses Abrams’s wife. When she first comes into the ED, she is distraught, but we can see that her story doesn’t add up. She isn’t sure about what she is saying, and she repeats whatever Archer says about their son’s fall.
Michelle is clearly lying about something, but it’s not evidence enough to believe she hurt their son. Nevertheless, Archer believes they must report it.
Even though Archer and Asher usually see eye-to-eye, they don’t agree on this. Probably because she sees that Asher is on their side, Michelle tells her the truth.
Yes, she lies about what happened to their son, but it isn’t to protect herself. She lies because she is embarrassed and feels guilty.
Archer handles the situation the way any doctor would, but what can be criticized about this storyline on Chicago Med is the lack of support and information given to a new mom who is clearly struggling to balance taking care of her son, working, and sleeping.
Instead of making Michelle scared of speaking up, they should have offered resources and help so that she could open up and be honest from the beginning.
Ripley is Ready to Fight

When Ripley first joined Chicago Med, he was hot-headed and spontaneous. He went with his gut and didn’t hesitate to get into physical fights. Chicago Med Season 9 Episode 9, “Spin a Yarn, Get Stuck in Your Own String,” shows he is evolving.
When his patient refuses care because she is following a cult leader, Ripley is ready to do everything in his power to get her the right treatment. For a moment, this means even going as far as violating HIPAA when he discovers the leader was lying.
Instead of following his spontaneous reaction, Ripley talks about it with Charles, who finds a legal and ethical way to tell the patient the truth without violating HIPAA.
Once again, the relationship between these men has helped Ripley heal wounds from his past and rethink how he takes action at work. He isn’t the hot-headed doctor he once was. Instead, he is thoughtful about everything he does.
This doesn’t mean he isn’t ready to fight when necessary. Even though Peter (who always goes against the doctors) wants him to settle Liliana’s brother’s lawsuit, Ripley decides to fight it.
After Charles tells him how terrible Liliana’s brother has been, we don’t know if he is fighting for himself or Charles. Either way, seeing how he and the hospital handle the lawsuit moving forward will be interesting.
Goodwin’s Past and Present

Throughout Chicago Med Season 9, we have seen Goodwin work to find a balance between her personal and professional lives. Things got even more complicated when Bert was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
Still, she decides to invite her new boyfriend (and colleague) to her birthday party. Everything seems to be going well until Bert gets tired, starts saying goodnight, and mentions he will go to their bedroom and wait for her.
Goodwin doesn’t want to fight Bert, understanding his diagnosis, but when the children get involved, things get rocky.
As much as Bert is her past, he will always be in her present. He is the father of her children, and she won’t turn his back on him. When he needs her, she will be there.
But what does this mean for her new relationship? As understanding as Washington can be, will he stand by her as she deals with her family’s new reality?

Chicago Med Season 9 started out with Maggie’s divorce, but everything points to her getting involved with a new doctor. Johnson claiming he has ulterior motives for being at the hospital so much tells us he is interested in Maggie.
If we didn’t know whether she was interested in him, this episode proves she is. By telling the other nurse that she cannot put in a good word for herself, she confirms that she has some feelings for Johnson.
Hopefully, we will see the two of them explore this throughout the remainder of the season.
