Kapil Talwalkar Not Returning for ‘Night Court’ Season 2

Night Court‘s ensemble is experiencing a shake-up before its Season 2 premiere on NBC.

Kapil Talwalkar, who played the court clerk Neil in the comedy’s debut season, is not returning for the sophomore season.

Deadline reports Night Court‘s “new creative direction” as the reason for Talwalkar’s exit. The outlet shares that the new season “will be more in the tradition of the original Night Court, which showcased different personalities, characters and perspectives.”

TV Line adds, “But the source emphasizes that the cast and producers are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Talwalkar, and he will always be a part of the Night Court family.”

Talwakar’s Neil is noticeably absent on Night Court‘s holiday special, “A Night Court Before Christmas.” The episode aired on Saturday, December 23, at 8:30/7:30c on NBC.

While Talwalkar exits the comedy series before the second season, Gary Anthony Williams, who played Flobert on “A Night Before Christmas,” will recur on Night Court Season 2. As previously reported, the second season premieres on Tuesday, January 2, at 8/7c on NBC.

Based on the original hit series that for nine seasons from 1984 to 1992 on NBC, Night Court debuted in 2023 and stars Melissa Rauch as Abby Stone and John Larroquette as Dan Fielding. The cast also includes India de Beaufort as Olivia and Lacretta as Donna “Gurgs” Gurganous.

The show sees Rauch’s Abby follow “in the footsteps of her revered late father, Judge Harry Stone, as she takes on the challenge of overseeing the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court,” per the show’s synopsis.

She enlists Dan Fielding, a former night court district attorney, to serve as the court’s public defender. Beaufort’s Olivia is the court’s assistant district attorney, and Lacretta’s Donna is the night court’s bailiff. 

From executive producer and writer Dan Rubin, Melissa Rauch and Winston Rauch executive produce through their After January Productions. Mona Garcea oversees for After January Productions, and John Larroquette serves as a producer on Night Court

Rauch’s After January Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, produces the show.

Night Court Season 2 premieres on Tuesday, January 2, at 8/7c on NBC.
