The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 11 Review: You’ve Got a Friend

Reviews, The Winchesters

Pacing is an issue for The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 11, “You’ve Got a Friend.” However, it gets there in the end. The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 10, “Suspicious Minds” is such a move in the right direction that this one feels like a leap backward.

It isn’t a bad episode. It just takes a while to get to the point.

We watch Mary, John, and Millie try to figure out how to save John from life in prison. Then, we watch Millie and Mary focus on convincing Betty that the Akrida exist.

Of course, this is also to save John.

Getting Betty to see the demons is an important next step because having a cop on their side could really benefit them. Betty is an important piece going forward and potentially in future seasons.

She can help cover up some crimes. You know, the way cops in supernatural shows do best.

Betty being a new active member of this gang — if only in a supporting role — has a lot of importance for The Winchesters‘ future missions. Additionally, “You’ve Got a Friend” sets up important developments for the characters and this fight against the Akrida.

Nevertheless, it just feels like some scenes stall to get to the ultimate conclusion. For example, we don’t need all those scenes of John dealing with the Akrida members impersonating cops.

Besides, these scenes are not that interesting.

Moreover, they don’t tell us anything new. We already know that the Akrida wants Dean. It does, however, allow Mary and John to go on a mission to find their future son.

Once again, it’s an important development done in a meh way.

However, it appears that “You’ve Got a Friend” may confirm a fan theory: the Supernatural multiverse.

John figures out that Dean must not be from this earth likely means that the John and Mary we’re following in The Winchesters aren’t exactly the same John and Mary of Dean’s future. Potentially, this is an entirely different timeline.

This Winchesters episode also is starting the path to the inevitable Dean, Mary, and John showdown against the Akrida. It’s a match that we cannot wait to watch.

Let’s talk about Latika’s past. We get a hint of her dark secret in a previous episode, so it’s nice to finally come back around to it.

Additionally, learning more about Latika and Maggie’s relationship is interesting. We aren’t expecting Maggie and Latika to seem so much like a duo and besties.

We would love to see the series explore more of that history on future episodes. However, the main focus of “You’ve Got a Friend” remains on Latika and her secret.

To The Winchesters’ credit, the secret is pretty horrible. The show doesn’t make it sound worse than it actually is, because it’s pretty traumatic.

Furthermore, it’s a good reminder that all monsters aren’t otherworldly. Latika’s parents are monsters living in plain sight.

Latika’s secret reveal is major and gives the viewers a deeper look at her because she often doesn’t receive enough attention on the show. We wish that Latika’s secret comes out sooner on the episode, so we can explore her emotional turmoil more.

Latika has been such a strong and supportive character that it would have been nice to allow her more time to sit in her vulnerability.

Stray Thoughts
  • The transition from Latika’s hellscape and the real world feels awkward. She goes from tears to cheers (joy) in a matter of seconds.
  • At least Kyle gets a second of mourning for him. Far longer than his actual appearance in the series.
  • Maggie has a different vibe than I expect, but that makes me more curious about the character.
  • The Winchesters faces the recent TV shows and movies epidemic of scenes being too dark. The scene in Sonia’s prison/room needs some more light to fully appreciate the emotional devastation of it.
