The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 10 Review: Suspicious Minds

Reviews, The Winchesters

The Winchesters may be starting an exciting sprint to the finale. The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 10, “Suspicious Minds,” revolves around the Akrida and the series is better because of it. Debatably, it’s one of the show’s best episodes thus far.

“Suspicious Minds” has focus, goals, and some excellent twists. Let’s start with this week’s villain: Jack Wilcox.

Besides some strange accent choices at the end of the episode, he’s the show’s best villain of the week up to this point. He’s both fun and menacing. It’s almost a shame that he’s (presumably) dead because Jack could have been a great recurring villain.

To its credit, the last few villains of the week in The Winchesters have been a vast improvement from some of the ones on earlier episodes. It’s also nice to see them tie into the Akrida storyline in an interesting way.

Jack’s presence highlights the powerfulness of these creatures and the queen entity. Their devastating effects span far and wide.

The scars Akrida has left on Jack nicely pair with the subplot of Rockin’ Roxy trying to channel her troublesome memories. The two plots work in harmony on “Suspicious Minds.”

They almost act as two timepieces of Akrida history and havoc. Clearly, Rockin’ Roxy and Jack have both been victims of them. However, one finds a way to cope with it in a healthy manner while the other completely self-destructs.

Most likely, the difference in coping has to do with one already being part of the monster world, and the other being new to all of this. In addition, Roxy can (maybe) eventually return to her normal life.

Naturally, most of Jack’s norm always involves monsters.

Jack and Roxy’s stories effectively lead into the ending twist with John and Kyle. Apparently, Kyle really serves no purpose but to die. However, this death may make him one of the key parts of the next few episodes.

John has already seen plenty of death during his time in the war. Those scars remain. Kyle’s death not only will present John with some legality issues but more than one ghost may begin to haunt him.

John barely knew Kyle but seeing a murder — especially when you know it happens because of you — is definitely going to start to affect John’s psyche.

Additionally, how does one escape being sent to prison for this crime? Every crime show has shown that you can usually detect where and how someone stabs a person.

Therefore, will the cops — mainly Betty — be able to see that Kyle stabs himself?

We have to wait and see.

“Suspicious Minds” does an excellent job of giving more insight into the Men of Letters. There are two factions of fans watching The Winchesters. They are those who are familiar with Supernatural and those who know very little or nothing about it.

Certainly, the explanation of the Men of Letters and this moment in history with Jack clears a hazy photo of them to non-Supernatural watchers.

You know their existence and their function in this world but the organization becomes more vibrant after hearing about them from a former member, even one with a big grudge against them.

Henry does an okay job giving an image of the Men of Letters on The Winchesters Season 1 Episode 7, “Reflections,” but they feel more solid and less abstract after getting a little insider information from Jack.

This Winchesters episode gives us a lot to enjoy as we face another short hiatus and look toward the final three episodes of the season.

Stray Thoughts
  • We need a full season of Mary fighting demons at KSU.
  • Should we just prepare ourselves now for Anton’s probable death before the season closes?
  • This episode has a lot of funny moments without trying too hard to make us laugh. More of this.
  • Tony, Samuel, and Ada all have to make appearances on the final few episodes, right?
  • We need to see Tony and Latika take their potential romance out of the dream world.
  • Dean playing such a major role now (as a new Akrida target) is an interesting development that will be entertaining to see play out.
