Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 12 Review: We All Know What They Say About Assumptions
Chicago Med Season 8 Episode 12, “We All Know What They Say About Assumption,” ramps up the conflict between AI and conventional medicine.
This has been a running theme this season, and the show is sticking to it. The show also continues to focus on the medical procedural aspect of the show rather than getting too deep into the characters’ interpersonal relationships.

Hannah has been having an incredible season. Chicago Med has set her on a course for one of the best redemption arcs the show has ever featured.
Her patient on this episode is heartbreakingly realistic. She’s a woman who’s been placated too long. It’s sad that more healthcare providers haven’t actually listened to her and paid attention to her symptoms.
Thankfully, she has Hannah as her doctor and her advocate. Hannah spends all episode just waiting to say her piece. Even before she’s assigned to this patient, it’s clear she knows what needs to be done.
If Jack Dayton is going to be in charge of Gaffney, he needs to appreciate the realities of patient care. Hannah is exactly the person he needs to tell him the hard truths. This patient’s situation was completely preventable, and the Gaffney team has a chance to ensure this never happens again.

One story that hasn’t completely been working so far is Maggie’s relationship and her separation from Ben. Chicago Med hasn’t spent enough time developing this arc if it wants to focus on it.
Maggie and Ben are such a phenomenally strong couple. Granted, all couples go through struggles, and this should be allowed to be a part of their story.
Maggie reconnecting with Grant could have been a compelling storyline. This could have been a moment for her to reflect on her own life and what Ben means to her. However, this work has never been done.
There is still hope for Maggie and Ben yet. Ideally, this time apart will just give each character room to grow on their own and then come back together. They are meant to be.

It’s always great to see Sharon and Maggie put their nursing skills to use. Chicago Med is never wrong to show that these two phenomenal leaders still have their frontline skills ready at a moment’s notice.
Not only are these two characters well-matched professionally, but they’re also magnetic to watch. They clearly thrive in an emergency, and their ability to laser-focus on saving lives serves them and their patients well.
This is an all-too-brief moment for these two, who really should spend a lot more screen time together. If anything, this dramatic rescue is proof that these two can hold their own as nurses, which they will always be.
Chicago Med does this a lot in that characters who have impeccable chemistry are not given the time together that they deserve.

One of the main stories of this season has been integrating AI technology into Gaffney’s regular operations. Crockett has already gone on his own journey to reconcile, wanting to maintain his integrity as a surgeon while seeing a place for advanced technology in patient care.
On this episode, Will is one of the physicians put in the hot seat, ultimately relying on this new technology to save a patient. Is Will the latest Gaffney doctor who is willing to start accepting this brave new AI world?
Dean Archer, however, isn’t so easily convinced. While he’s still dealing with his own physical health issues, it’s clear he isn’t ready to accept such drastic change.
This story is also a venue to prove once again how fiercely loyal Sharon is to her team. This is the mark of only the best leaders, that she’s able to stand up to anyone to defend her people. Dean needs people like Sharon in his corner.

Finally, Chicago Med is fast establishing Liliana and Daniel as the couple to cheer for. They’ve hit their first rocky patch, and they navigate it as well as can be expected.
Their dynamic is a fascinating one. It’s already been established that they are beginning this relationship on unequal terms. It’s evident that until now, Daniel in particular may not have fully considered the implications of this.
Hopefully, they have now reached an understanding and can continue to grow and change together. They have so much potential as a couple, and they both deserve to be happy.
This episode is also yet another reminder that Daniel Charles continues to be the heart and soul of this series. His vulnerability is nothing less than enthralling to watch.
It’s a mark of true strength, that he’s able to be so open and honest about his own mental health. Even mental health professionals sometimes struggle against their own minds.
Chicago Med continues its strong season, pairing a focus on day-to-day medical drama with a season-long arc that comments on an actual healthcare issue.
If this balance can be maintained, there may be more captivating stories yet to come.
