Chicago P.D. Season 13 Episode 20 Review: The Lost Years

Chicago P.D., Reviews

Nothing has motivated Imani more in her life than the search for her sister. Everything we have seen of her since she joined the team has revolved around her sister’s disappearance and the desire (or need) to find her, and Chicago P.D. Season 13 Episode 20, “The Lost Years,” shakes up this storyline in an expected yet unexpected way (if that makes sense…stay with me here).

Voight’s promise to help Imani find her sister becomes real as we watch the two of them, night after night, search the streets of Chicago for her sister. We hear their different theories as they meet new people on their search and come across new clues.

Their dynamic becomes familiar, and their bond grows stronger as they take turns bringing each other coffee. It is obvious that Voight has been looking out for her, trying to keep her as level-headed as possible. Something that becomes even clearer the moment the evidence brings them closer than ever to Shari.

There is something extremely remarkable about this episode. Imani rushes through every piece of evidence, every interrogation, trying to move on to the next thing because her sister could be right around the corner. But even though her brain is running at a hundred miles per hour, both she and Voight stop to put on gloves when examining the dead body.

While this may seem like an obvious thing to do, several procedural shows skip over this part when a scene is rushing, and people are running at the speed of light. So we must applaud the team for paying attention to this detail.

Beyond that, Imani does everything in a rush, moving as fast as she can to catch up to her sister. It feels as if she’s running out of time, thinking this is the last opportunity she has to save her.

Voight notices this, constantly trying to rein her back and keep her in check. However, he understands why she is behaving this way, and the best solution he can come up with is pairing her with Torres.

Torres’s energy is calm, cool, and collected which contrasts perfectly with Imani’s impatience on this episode. He is able to see things more clearly, guaranteeing that even though she is rushing, he won’t miss anything she might.

They have become one of the best duos to watch on the show.

Torres’s attention to detail and taking things slower than Imani leads to him finding Shari in the house that Imani leaves behind to chase the man who took her sister. She is so set on getting him that she forgets her sister might be in that house.

The reunion between the sisters goes completely opposite to what Imani had been picturing for 22 years. The thing is, Imani has spent her entire life thinking about her sister and ways to find her.

Imani spent her entire childhood following her parents from state to state as they chased clues of where Shari might be. All she knows how to do is look for her sister. Finding her makes her (and us) wonder who she is without that constant search. Where does she go from here?

But for Shari, life wasn’t about Imani. She was held by the same man for 22 years. A man who made her pass for his daughter at first, to later make her his wife, while pimping her out.

Shari has gone through the typical brainwashing a long-time victim goes through. Her past has been erased, and that’s why her first reaction is to ask, “Who the hell are you?”

Nevertheless, a part of her past is still present in the candy she buys, which she used to buy with Imani during their childhood.

As the team continues to look for the man who kidnapped Shari, it’ll be interesting to see how both women react to their reunion. Imani will do everything she can to remind her sister of who she used to be, but will that be enough?

Will Shari be able to break the chains that tie her to Kirby? Or will she side with him when the time comes for the Intelligence Unit to catch him?

All of these details will make for a great Chicago P.D. Season 13 finale.
