Welcome to a new week and special Winter TV Edition of What to Watch on TV for the week of January 1st! We’ll share our picks for what to watch this week, including our favorite TV returns and exciting winter premieres.

This week we feature The Rookie crossover, major franchise returns, and a few exciting new season premieres!

Here are our recommendations for what to watch on TV this week:

The Great North – Sunday, January 1st

The animated series is back from its holiday hiatus with Moon and the Junior Janitors getting caught up in a scandal that involves teachers. Meanwhile, the rest of the family has to deal with a bunch of crabs. The Great North returns Sunday, January 1st at 8:30/7:30c on FOX.

Episode Description: Moon and the Junior Janitors get involved with a teacher scandal; the rest of the family gets involved with a bunch of crabs.

Kaleidoscope – Sunday, January 1st

Giancarlo Esposito returns to TV with this new series about a master thief and his crew. There is all the makings of a great drama between betrayals, greed, and other intense threats when they attempt the biggest heist of their careers — $7 billion. Kaleidoscope streams Sunday, January 1st on Netflix.

Series Description: A master thief and his crew attempt an epic heist worth $7 billion, but betrayal, greed and other threats undermine their plans.

Yellowstone – Sunday, January 1st

Big changes are coming for the Yellowstone Ranch cowboys while Jamie and John make big decisions. There still isn’t any word on when new episodes will return, so you don’t want to miss this midseason finale. Yellowstone airs Sunday, January 1st at 8/7c on Paramount Network.

Episode Description: Jamie goes through with his plan; John has a request for Monica and lends support to an unexpected friend; the Yellowstone cowboys embark on a big change; a flashback reveals a source of Rip’s loyalty.

It’s 1979, and Ben has just landed as Jack Armstrong a security guard to the talented pop singer, Carly Farmer. Ben must determine quickly how to save Carly’s life. Quantum Leap airs Monday, January 2nd at 10/9c on NBC

Episode Description: Ben lands in 1979 Chicago as Jack Armstrong, a devoted security guard to talented pop singer Carly Farmer; during Carly’s prep for a concert, it quickly becomes clear her life is in danger and Ben must determine who is trying to kill her and why.

FBI – Tuesday, January 3rd

Isobel reconnects with her old partner, Jake, when a cold case gets reopened due to a current abduction. It gives her a second chance to solve one of her first cases. FBI airs Tuesday, January 3rd at 8/7c on CBS.

Episode Description: The abduction of a young woman leads the team back to a cold case from 18 years ago, which pushes Isobel to reconnect with her old partner Jake and take another shot at solving one of her first cases at the bureau.

A robbery in Los Angeles leads to a citywide manhunt. In the course of the investigation, the FBI is pulled in to prevent a list of undercover agents being revealed. The excitement starts Tuesday, January 3rd with The Rookie at 8/7c and continues on The Rookie: Feds at 9/8c on ABC.

The Rookie Description: Detective Nyla Harper and James find themselves in the middle of a bank robbery which leads the entire team on a citywide manhunt. Meanwhile, Tim and Lucy finally go on their first date, but it does have a few complications.

The Rookie: Feds Description: A mysterious caller threatens to reveal a leaked list of undercover FBI agents if a prisoner is not released. After an exposed agent is mortally wounded, the team identifies the caller and heads to the Port of Los Angeles to secure the release of the prisoner. Later, Simone enlists John Nolan to help her remodel Cutty’s garage into a living space; and Brendon, ready to confess his feelings to Antoinette, discovers she has feelings for someone else.

The Resident – Tuesday, January 3rd

The penultimate Season 6 episode brings our Chastain gang back to us, if even for a brief time. Dr. Yamada’s mentor, a famous cardiothoracic surgeon, comes to Chastain when experiencing heart pain. The Resident airs Tuesday, January 3rd at 8/7c on FOX.

Episode Description: A famous cardiothoracic surgeon — who happens to be Dr. Yamada’s mentor — comes into Chastain after experiencing heart pain; Kit breaks the news that the emergency room will no longer be accepting trauma patients due to budget cuts.

New Amsterdam – Tuesday, January 3rd

Max is thrown for a loop when Helen Sharpe suddenly returns to New York, so he goes on a retreat with Bloom, Wilder, and Iggy. Meanwhile, Reynolds agrees to a risky surgery that could change his career. New Amsterdam airs Tuesday, January 3rd at 10/9c on NBC.

Episode Description: When Helen Sharpe unexpectedly returns to New York, Max escapes to the wilderness on a corporate retreat with Bloom, Wilder and Iggy; fun soon turns into catastrophe that threatens a life; Reynolds agrees to perform a risky surgery.

Will Trent – Tuesday, January 3rd

Based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling books, the series follows Special Agent Will Trent as he investigates cases for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Will Trent premieres Tuesday, January 3rd at 10/9c on ABC.

Episode Description: Special Agent Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) relies on his keen instincts and unique experience to uncover the truth when a murder investigation reveals there’s more to the story than meets the eye.

Abbott Elementary – Wednesday, January 4th

Can anyone say pizza? Janine and Melissa go head-to-head in a competition to get their students to read the most books and earn a pizza prize. Meanwhile, Jacob and Gregory band together to get a podcasting club off the ground. Abbott Elementary airs Wednesday, January 4th at 9/8c on ABC.

Episode Description: The competition heats up between Melissa and Janine as their classes go head-to-head in a read-a-thon sponsored by a local pizza shop; Jacob and Gregory join forces and attempt to get their student-podcasting club off the ground.

Home Economics – Wednesday, January 4th

Tom’s jealous green eyes surface when Marina begins working with a new contractor. Elsewhere, Denise gets involved in Connor’s plot to impress a new woman. Home Economics airs Wednesday, January 4th at 9:30/8:30c on ABC.

Episode Description: After Marina begins working with a hunky new contractor, Tom’s envy causes him to overcompensate; Connor involves Denise in his scheme to impress a new woman.

Big Sky: Deadly Trails – Wednesday, January 4th

With a return to Montana, the mysteries heat up for Cassie, Jenny, and Beau. The trail toward answers gets more deadly as everything comes to an exciting head. Big Sky: Deadly Trails airs Wednesday, January 4th at 10/9c on ABC.

Series Description: Private detective Cassie Dewell (Kylie Bunbury), undersheriff Jenny Hoyt (Katheryn Winnick), and newly appointed sheriff Beau Arlen (Jensen Ackles) maintain order in Helena, Montana, with their unparalleled investigative skills. The Chicago shows are back from hiatus in one exciting Wednesday lineup. Each show is bound to give us a night of excitement and drama we won’t soon forget. Wednesday, January 4th has Chicago Med at 8/7c, Chicago Fire at 9/8c, and Chicago P.D. at 10/9c on NBC.

Chicago Med Description: Charles and Cuevas help an elderly patient and her developmentally disabled grandson; Halstead treats a swimmer with a heart condition; Marcel considers using the OR 2.0 for surgery; Asher and Lieu search for a pregnant woman lost in the woods.

Chicago Fire Description: Detective Pryma’s case comes to an explosive end with Kidd and Carver’s lives in danger; Brett installs an infant safe surrender box at 51; Violet is determined to take Emma down.

Chicago P.D. Description: A series of brutal home invasion robberies finds the team paired with Detective Borkowski, an old friend of Ruzek’s, to work the case; things get complicated for Torres when it becomes clear Borkowski has a vastly different policing style.

Doom Patrol – Thursday, January 5th

On the Season 4 midseason finale, the team continues to fight for answers about what caused the future doomsday. To do that they know they have to go back to the bureau — the beginning.  Doom Patrol airs Thursday, January 5th on HBO Max.

Season Description: The team unexpectedly travels to the future to find an unwelcome surprise. Faced with their imminent demise, the Doom Patrol must decide once and for all which is more important: their own happiness or the fate of the world?

Law & Order/SVU/Organized Crime – Thursday, January 5th

New York’s finest are back with more crime and more excitement. While, the task force’s story isn’t connected in anyway, the SVU team get help from Lt. Dixon from the 27th because their victim is deaf. Thursday, January 5th has Law & Order at 8/7c, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit at 9/8c, and Law & Order: Organized Crime at 10/9c on NBC.

Law & Order Description: When a homeless migrant is murdered, evidence leads Cosgrove and Shaw to a mysterious cover-up at a construction site; Price and Maroun push a key witness to testify, knowing that speaking out could lead to legal consequences.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Description: When Benson becomes the target of a ruthless gang leader, Captain Duarte takes the case; Fin works with the Bronx SVU to help clear their case backlog; Lieutenant Dixon offers to translate when a deaf student is raped.

Law & Order: Organized Crime Description: When an informant comes to Stabler desperate for help, the task force sets their sights on a dangerous gang making their mark on New York; Jamie goes undercover, but soon realises he may be in over his head; Bell meets her new boss.

Ginny & Georgia – Thursday, January 5th

A few weeks from where Season 1 left off, Season 2 picks up to find Ginny in a moral conundrum about Georgia’s involvement in the death of Kenny. Meanwhile, Georgia is more focused on the wedding she needs to plan — despite her past trying to catch up with her. Ginny & Georgia streams Thursday, January 5th on Netflix.

Season Description: Ginny must figure out how to live with the knowledge that her mother is a murderer. Burdened with the new understanding that Kenny – her step-dad – didn’t die of natural causes, now Ginny must deal with the fact that Georgia not only killed, she killed to protect Ginny. Georgia on the other hand would much prefer that the past be left in the past, after all, she’s got a wedding to plan! But the funny thing about Georgia’s past is that it never stays buried for long.

So Help Me Todd – Thursday, January 5th

The chaos continues with the return of Margaret and Todd’s shenanigans. Todd has to seek the help of his ex-girlfriend, Veronica, for their latest case. The kicker? She’s in prison. So Help Me Todd airs Thursday, January 5th at 9/8c on CBS.

Episode Description: When Margaret finds herself on the verge of losing a prominent case involving the murder of an investigative journalist, Todd seeks help from an unlikely source — his imprisoned ex-girlfriend, Veronica.

The much anticipated new movie starring Christain Bale and Harry Melling sees a young Edgar Allen Poe — currently a cadet — helping Detective Augustus Landor investigate some grisly murders. The Pale Blue Eye airs Friday, January 6th on Netflix.

Movie Description: Veteran detective Augustus Landor investigates a series of grisly murders with the help of a young cadet who will eventually go on to become the world-famous author Edgar Allan Poe.

Reba McEntire’s: The Hammer – Saturday, January 7th

Reba McEntire and Melissa Peterman reunite for this exciting film about a newly appointed judge having to choose between family and justice when her sister becomes a murder suspect. The two women work together to clear their family name, even if it means twisting the law. Reba McEntire’s: The Hammer airs Saturday, January 7th at 8/7c on Lifetime.

Movie Description: A newly appointed judge makes sure justice is served when her sister becomes the prime suspect in the suspicious death of her courtroom predecessor.
