FBI Season 5 Episode 9 Review: Fortunate Son
FBI Season 5 Episode 9, “Fortunate Son,” manages to hold a steady pace with the story, but our characters fall apart towards the end.
The episode focuses on Scola, and in turn, Nina, as they have multiple discussions about her pregnancy.
Cats in the Cradle

The episode surrounds a man who [checks notes] gets shot and then asks his son to hide his drugs.
It’s a very casual fall finale of FBI.
Will Sasso of Vine fame stars as a deadbeat dad who deals drugs and initiates his son into helping him without even telling his son that’s what he’s doing.
It’s a touching episode as we get the point of view of the son — begging his father to put him first, and having to deal with the result of his father being a true narcissist.
We also get to see more of Scola and Nina discuss what to do with their upcoming baby, and that is… something.
Daddy Lessons

My major problem with this episode is the fact that even though they gave us multiple episodes of Nina, and even some with some backstory, they didn’t give us enough for us to know whether this is out of character for Nina.
It’s an interesting request, that’s for sure. She’s adamant at the beginning of the episode that she wants to raise the baby alone, but by the end, is happy to talk baby names with Scola.
Nina’s decision makes some sense, but considering she and Scola had an amicable breakup, it’s… interesting.
Nina wanting control over her and her baby’s life makes sense, absolutely, but for her to flip a switch that easily in the end and be willing to go to dinner and talk baby names is genuinely baffling.
Daddy Issues

The end of the episode is the most shocking — Scola has just been forced to witness someone’s death, and he’s had to console the son who lost his father.
It’s not shocking that he would feel a certain way about it, but I wish we’d gotten to see more of him talking it out with Tiff than him just letting it go.
When he talks to Nina, he’s entirely present, which is what both of them need, but I do wish we’d seen him discussing this with anyone else on the team.
His decision is the right one though — and despite my hatred of random pregnancy storylines, especially on procedurals like FBI, I hope we get to see Scola be a father and Nina as a mother.
ZiBell in the Backseat

As much as it sucked seeing Maggie be pushed to the forefront when she’s back so soon, the fact that the story itself is a fantastic one makes it worth it.
Scola is meant to be a father just as he’s meant to be an agent; it would be obvious to anyone.
The fact that Isobel even agrees to put a child in the midst of gunfire is shocking, but it makes me want to learn even more about her.
Despite the craziness surrounding Nina and Scola, “Fortunate Son” is a very strong episode of FBI.
Stray Thoughts
- I am not a drug expert but I would like a fact check on whether or not breaking open that bag of Fentanyl would’ve killed every agent on the premises.
- “My dad will listen to me!” My brother in Christ, your dad just gave his teenage son drugs to look after. I would not bet on that.
- Tiff knowing that Nina is pregnant is so special, and I only wish we’d gotten to see Scola tell her about it.
- I hope they name the boy Stuart so he becomes a Jr. and they can call him Stuart Little.

The Fentanyl bit is highly inaccurate because of how the drug enters into your system. These links will give you more information. I’m currently fighting the kind of misinformation in this episode at my work. https://www.statnews.com/2017/08/09/fentanyl-falling-ill/
