The Resident Season 6 Episode 3 Review: One Bullet

Reviews, The Resident

Before we dive into the essential bits and pieces of The Resident Season 6 Episode 3, “One Bullet,” can we discuss how nothing will ever compare to the happiness we experience as we see The Raptor holding his twin boys for the first time? We were definitely shedding some tears!

After Padma’s close call on The Resident Season 6 Episode 1, “Two Hearts,” we were left wondering how risky her delivery would be. Unfortunately, “One Bullet” proves that as her twin sister has to jump in and perform life-saving surgery.

But at the end of the day, everyone’s favorite Cardiothoracic/General/Trauma doctor is officially a dad. It’s a full circle moment for AJ, who recently lost his mother and demonstrated how alone he felt in the world.

It was clear at the end of The Resident Season 6 Episode 2, “Peek and Shriek,” that Chastain would face financial struggles. As a public hospital, they operate differently and need to rely on the government for funding.

However, “One Bullet,” or what Kit Voss calls “one damn bullet,” proves there aren’t only financial issues at stake. A blood and physician shortage makes every case harder than it should be.

Even though Voss is trying her best to keep Chastain above the water, are her efforts enough?

Deciding whether one person’s surgery gets pushed back and another’s is moving forward is not easy. Even talented surgeons like Billie cannot know the repercussions of these actions.

This time around, the doctors at Chastain can keep things at bay. The GSW patient — or as they call him, Eucalyptus — has a long recovery ahead of himself, but they manage to keep him alive. Plus, Padma and her twins are safe.

But how long can they keep fighting this way? How many more patients must be at the doors of death for Chastain to receive the funding it deserves?

If “Peek and Shriek” was a premonition of what the new government would do with healthcare, every doctor on The Resident would struggle. There will be less funding but a lot more patients.

Private hospitals are turning patients away if their insurance isn’t good enough or if their wounds will need more than a handful of doctors on the case. The professionals at Chastain are better than that and don’t deny treatment to anyone. But will this continue to be the case?

It’s Always Personal at Chastain

Even though the leading case on “One Bullet” doesn’t involve anyone related to the doctors, it affects them personally.

Padma’s surgery continues to get pushed back to the point that her uterus ruptures, putting her and the twins’ lives at risk.

From the beginning of Season 6, we have seen the mother of two struggling with her health, so it’s not surprising her life is at risk once more. Can she finally catch a break?

As happy as we are that she is safe and the twins are okay, the ending of “One Bullet” shows Padma will have a long recovery ahead, and the repercussions will be significant. So you have to wonder if AJ can handle everything on his own.

Something tells us that as much as Leela didn’t want to have kids in Season 5, she will be helping out her twin sister a lot. What will this mean for her relationship with Devon? Children were a huge topic of argument for the couple in the past.

Will There Ever Be Trust at Chastain?

It seems like no matter what they do, the doctors at Chastain always wear their hearts on their sleeves.

They cannot seem to distance their personal life from their professional life. I guess that happens when everyone’s dating pool is in the hospital and strong bonds are created in the workplace.

As soon as “One Bullet” mentions a drug test, we know Conrad opened his big mouth. The man has a “death before dishonor” tattoo, so it is expected that he will always do what he believes is right. However, it might not work in his favor this time.

After meeting Cade in Season 5, it was hard for the audience to get to know her. To this day, she keeps a wall up and only allows us to see certain things. But she is trying to let Conrad into her life.

Conrad goes behind her back to Kit about a person in the hospital using drugs, and Cade’s trust shakes. She is finally opening up, making Chastain her home, but now she feels betrayed.

However, she realizes Conrad isn’t the only one breaking her trust. Her dad is doing the same thing by lying to her. So even though she cannot be entirely sure, Cade knows he isn’t being honest with her.

Lack of trust seems to be a recurring theme at Chastain. It started with Bell in Season 1 and seemed to continue down the same path with Ian. His resemblance to Bell in the earlier seasons is uncanny.

But can he, like Bell, redeem himself? Everything is pointing to a big no.

Stray Observations
  • Because they do everything in a personal way, the doctors at Chastain give a name to every GSW patient that comes in without an ID. I think this is a sweet touch, showing how much they care about every patient. On “One Bullet,” it was particularly nice to see them let the new intern give the patient a name; she’s slowly becoming one of them.
  • Kit Voss grabbing the phone from Irving as they are running down the hallway with a patient to figure out what to do with the OR schedule was pretty badass.
  • The best thing they did on “One Bullet” to show how much one case can affect an entire hospital was to add the count of how many healthcare workers had to get involved in treating one patient with one bullet wound.
  • The mention of a new trauma room means there have been improvements around the hospital, but how long can it last? Also, when will Chastain stop being up-to-date with technology?
  • Nurse Hundley is definitely what keeps Chastain together. She knows everyone and understands exactly how everything works. It would be nice to see her be the main character in a future episode.
