The Resident Season 6 Episode 1 Review: Two Hearts

Reviews, The Resident

The Resident Season 6 Episode 1, “Two Hearts,” does what the show knows how to do best: take us on an emotional roller coaster. Thanks to a case that hits close to home for everyone at Chastain, the fans are reminded why we love this show so much.

Padma’s pregnancy complications lead the doctors to come together and save the twins and the mom. While proving that the staff at this particular hospital is one big family.

The Resident‘s premiere brings a little bit of everything that has made its previous five seasons so successful.

After Nic’s death on The Resident Season 5 Episode 3, “The Long and Winding Road,” the doctors at Chastain proved they are family and have each other’s back at all times. The same camaraderie happened with Bell’s MS diagnosis and AJ’s loss of his mother.

In times of need, they come together, and “Two Hearts” showcases that. However, family dynamics seem to be different this time around.

The first dynamic of the episode pulls in the entire hospital. When Padma needs a risky surgery that only Ian Sullivan can perform, the rest of the team tries to find the necessary equipment.

Even though he is miles away in another state, Bell is able to help. This completes his redemption arc, proving he isn’t the man he once was.

As the surgery begins, every person in the hospital is either in the room or the gallery watching. That is one of their own on the table; they will not leave them.

Leela is watching over her sister, and The Raptor promises nothing will happen to her as Ian saves the twins’ lives.

The other family dynamic that has been very strong throughout The Resident is that of fathers and their children. It started with Conrad and his complicated relationship with his father.

This time around, we have Conrad and Gigi dealing with nightmares, The Raptor with the fear of losing his twins, and Cade and Ian putting together a relationship that used to be extremely rocky.

As Conrad finds a way to put Gigi at ease and Padma’s surgery goes well, saving the twins, the only relationship that continues to struggle is that of Cade and Ian.

Even though things appear to be well between them, how long can it last?

Redemption Arc?

Fans of The Resident can guarantee one of the best storylines on the show has been Bell’s redemption arc.

From a man who didn’t care about anything but his career to one who is engaged, has a family, and fights for patients’ rights, he has come full circle.

At the beginning of the Season 6 premiere, we feel that Ian might be the next big redemption arc to come our way. But how much does he genuinely care about redeeming himself?

Instead, we see him trying to have a relationship with Cade but continuously lying to her and hiding the truth.

Andrew McCarthy’s addition as a series regular gives the writers and the audience plenty of screen time to see where the character of Ian will go. He is an incredibly talented doctor, but will that be enough to make up for his mistakes?

Can The Resident pull another perfect redemption arc, or is that asking for too much?

One thing The Resident will do is give us plenty of romance drama to keep the season interesting.

In Season 5, fans didn’t know whether Conrad would choose Billie or Cade. But fear not, “Two Hearts,” reveals the truth.

On the season premiere, this series makes us believe Conrad has chosen Billie as their relationship seems closer than before, and that’s a clever move. The two of them are comfortable around each other, but it is only as best friends.

Conrad has indeed chosen Cade. However, this choice won’t be taken kindly by everyone (fans and characters) as The Raptor insists Billie should be with Conrad.

The Season 6 premiere sets us up for what will undoubtedly be a complicated love triangle. But can Conrad and Billie cross that line?

The controversy among fans is whether his dead wife’s best friend is the best potential suitor for him, and only the remainder of The Resident will tell us the truth.

While the messy relationships continue, there is one that will always hold us over: Voss and Bell. Although Bell is in a different state for MS treatment, their relationship continues to go strong.

The two mention their wedding during “Two Hearts,” which is exciting because it suggests a wedding episode is happening this season. The perfect ending for Bell’s redemption arc!

Stray Observations
  • “Two Hearts” starts with a new intro with the main characters, updating its old five-season introduction.
  • The mention of Devon’s clinical trial and Kit Voss’s involvement in it might explain how these two characters will develop during Season 6. We can see a lot more from the two, mainly working together.
  • One thing the episode does well is connect the weather to the case. As the storm gets worse, so does Padma. Everything seems to be connected.
  • Conrad continues to be the string that ties everyone together. He is involved in every case at Chastain, connecting doctors and patients. His presence seems always to be calming, bringing answers and solutions.
