‘The Resident’ Upgrades Andrew McCarthy to Series Regular for Season 6
Andrew McCarthy is reprising his role of Dr. Ian Sullivan on The Resident for the show’s sixth season, this time as a series regular!
Deadline exclusively reported the news of McCarthy’s promotion to a series regular for Season 6. TV Insider also reported the news, confirming McCarthy had been optioned as a regular pending the show’s renewal.

McCarthy’s Dr. Ian Sullivan was introduced as the father to the mysterious Dr. Cade Sullivan at the end of The Resident Season 5. He entered the show after his daughter was shot. Shortly after that, he had his own medical emergency.
Though he saved his daughter’s life, it was immediately clear from the moment The Resident introduced this character that he would be the cause of significant conflict with his daughter and the Chastain Memorial staff.
For example, Dr. Ian Sullivan already butted heads with Conrad. The two characters represent conflicting versions of fatherhood which The Resident could explore on a deeper level in Season 6.

Of course, Ian’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis is another narrative route worthy of exploration during The Resident‘s upcoming season.
With Dr. Randolph Bell’s MS continuing to progress, Chastain’s medical professionals continue to confront their own mortality.
The Resident poises Ian Sullivan as a nationally renowned pediatric surgeon. So, Andrew McCarthy’s promotion to a series regular on the medical drama will likely result in seeing the doctor in action more.

As for Ian’s personal drama, it is unknown whether Conrad and Ian’s daughter Cade will become romantically involved when The Resident returns. The Season 5 finale left the question unresolved.
With that in mind, Ian’s relationship with Conrad could depend on the nature of his daughter’s relationship with the show’s leading man.
McCarthy is known for his work in such projects as Pretty in Pink, Weekend at Bernie’s, and St. Elmo’s Fire. He also has TV directing experience with Orange Is the New Black and The Blacklist, among others.
