The Resident Season 6 Episode 2 Review: Peek and Shriek
The promotional material for The Resident Season 6 Episode 2, “Peek and Shriek,” doesn’t prepare us for this episode!
Lucky for Dr./CEO Kit Voss fans, there is plenty of her to keep us happy. Not only do we see her kicking ass in the OR as the talented surgeon she is, but we get to see into her personal life, which we so often don’t.
Even though The Resident is great at balancing the doctors’ personal and professional lives, Voss is an exception. What we know about her life beyond Chastain comes from Randolph Bell’s life and the few episodes in which we saw her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter.

But who really is Kit Voss? Who is she when she isn’t a surgeon or the head of a hospital?
“Peek and Shriek” allows us to see more of her human side. This choice reminds viewers why we, and Bell, fell in love with the woman in the first place. It doesn’t always happen that a guest star becomes a series regular, but Jane Leeves managed to do that.
It is Kit’s charisma, her caring nature, and her talent that make her a vital member of the team. Unfortunately, however, we don’t get to see much beyond the mask.
This episode shows a more vulnerable side of Doctor Voss. She isn’t just a doctor trying to save her patient. Instead, she is a wife trying to deal with her husband’s diagnosis without letting it interfere with her cases.
This isn’t always easy. The good thing for Kit is that she has a great support system that will be there for her when she is ready to let her guard down.

The creator of The Resident has confirmed Bell’s absence for the first few episodes will allow Kit to shine on her own. It will be interesting to watch her develop her relationship with other characters.
“Peek and Shriek” gives us a glimpse of this potential dynamic by introducing her friendship with Billie. In the past, Kit was there when Billie confronted her abuser, and she was the one to choose Billie as Chief of Surgery because she believed in her potential.
Kit hasn’t had a friend throughout the seasons, and although Billie is close to The Raptor, we haven’t seen her develop any close friendships since Nic died. The possibilities are endless for these two women.
It will be fun to watch the show explore this while Bell is gone and as Billie continues to navigate her feelings for Conrad as he dates someone else.

But as it is to be expected on The Resident, it can’t all be talking over our emotions and drinking bourbon with our friends.
There has to be some drama, and of course, Conrad is in the middle of it.
How does he always manage to solve every tough case that comes to him? We may never know, but we can take a guess and say it might be because he takes the time to get to know the patients and listen to them beyond their diagnosis.
Yes, he does it again on “Peek and Shriek,” saving the day while Leela loses a patient and learns a crucial lesson.

Sometimes, we forget Chastain is a teaching hospital because we focus on the cases. Unfortunately, that isn’t what happens during this latest installment — actually, it’s quite the opposite.
As Leela realizes she has to take the time to teach interns and guide them, she also understands she is still in a learning process. And she does things by the hand of none other than The Raptor.
This man seems always to have the perfect words for people when they are messing up and how to fix it. He is the show’s voice of reason and continues to teach with every episode that passes us by.
It will be interesting to see him develop this quality as a father. But will he think he knows it all? Or will he allow himself to make mistakes and continue to learn?

Stray Observations:
- It will be interesting to see Devon and Kit’s relationship develop. She is an excellent part of his trial as his boss, but he understands how much is on the line for her. Could this also be an unexpected friendship?
- Cade opening up to Conrad about her father might create issues between them. But, on the other hand, Conrad’s honor and loyalty won’t allow him to let Ian work if there are doubts about him taking pills again. So which side will Cade be on?
- Every season they seem to add a new intern who is either connected to one of the doctors or extremely involved in a storyline. This time around, it will be good to see Leela connect with the intern to add an extra layer to her character and allow the intern to blossom the way the others did.
- After an election that seems to be terrible for healthcare, how will Chastain be affected? This storyline will also allow Kit Voss to shine as she will fight for justice for the hospital, the doctors, and the patients.
