Chicago Fire Review: What’s Inside You (Season 10 Episode 18)
An episode centered on Wallace Boden? Sign me up.
Chicago Fire Season 10 Episode 18, “What’s Inside You,” is one of the season’s best episodes, and it’s one that breaks form a bit. It’s actually often the case that some of the most engaging episodes do just that, and this time, the series is allowing Boden to really shine.
The hostage situation he winds up in feels like the sort of thing that’s been done a hundred times, at least, but with Boden at the center of it all making a connection with the shooter, it feels fresh and new.

There’s also something really endearing about how he ends up there in the first place. While Boden is out visiting other houses in the district, he stops at the store to get ingredients for a dry rub for Severide’s brisket: black pepper, chili powder, cumin. He’s excited about it, too.
But of course, there’s no such thing as a simple errand on Chicago Fire It’s while he’s there that a car crashes into the store — and a man who escaped from prison is in a shootout with the police.
Boden is a leader throughout the whole situation, and it’s baffling that the others held hostage in the store don’t take Boden’s telling looks seriously. Really, Boden can say so much with his eyes — listen to the man!
Eamonn Walker truly does give an incredible performance with every beat of this episode, particularly in the way he relates to the Will, the man who has taken them all hostage.

It’s getting through to Will that ultimately saves them all, though it’s a suspenseful road getting there. This is one of those “hold your breath” type episodes, and it feels like everything that can go wrong, will go wrong.
But in the end, it’s Boden’s ability to connect with Will that matters. More than that — his willingness to jump into action when it looks like Will is about to take his own life.
Because as the episode moves forward, Will becomes a more well-rounded character. You feel empathy for this man who has been treated unfairly by the system, and you see how there’s even more potential for things to get worse.

There’s a bit of hope from the retired lawyer, whose kind nature and desperation also help diffuse the situation — and I’d like to think, will also help Will in the long run.
The rest of Firehouse 51 does also help with the hostage crisis. Upon realizing that Boden is in the store, they fearlessly head down there, ready to do what’s needed. The focus remains on Boden, but when called upon, they can cause distractions and climb through roofs like it’s no big deal.

It’s really fun to watch, and the overall result is a really well-done, entertaining, and emotional episode of Chicago Fire.
Other thoughts:
- There isn’t much time spent on it, but we’re clearly supposed to be concerned about Emma Jacobs.
- Cruz is over here asking the important questions: when the heck is the #Stellaride wedding?
