Suspicion Review: Be The Gray Man (Season 1 Episode 6)

Reviews, Suspicion

Our suspects spend Suspicion Season 1 Episode 6, “Be The Gray Man,” preparing for the next leg in their journey. There’s a lot of work that goes into sneakily flying to America when you’ve got British and American law enforcement keeping tabs on you.

“Be The Gray Man” is a decent episode. We get to see our suspects attempt to be a bit stealthy, which they aren’t all that great at, but they’re learning. Natalie manages to spot all the cops at her father’s place, which is probably a skill she didn’t have up until now.

Splitting everyone up allows Suspicion to explore some unusual pairings, which is fun to watch. Eddie trying to get Sean to talk or even like him is beyond amusing, and then Natalie and Aadesh have a moment to process everything without Sean’s looming influence.

My theory about Eddie being a plant was correct!

Suspicions (ha!) were raised back on Suspicion Season 1 Episode 5, “What Does a Kidnapper Look Like?,” and thankfully the show is smart enough not to drag this out. Besides the fact that it’s fairly obvious with all the probing questions he asks, things are much more exciting now that we know the truth about Eddie.

I won’t go so far as to say that we care about his safety and worry about him being discovered by Sean, but he’s definitely more interesting (and less annoying) now that we know this truth about him and his mission.

Vanessa being the one to send him in, and hide it from Scott, makes me like her so much more.

She’s realized that a different approach is needed to find Leo and uncover the truth, and so she made it happen by sending in a surprisingly inexperienced agent. She took some initiative, and honestly, it’s paid off.

Eddie is the best lead they have right now. We don’t see them trying to uncover clues about who is sending all these “tell the truth” videos and hacking various places. Vanessa and Scott seem to be basing their entire case off the actions of the suspects. Probably not the wisest investigative move, but that’s what they are doing.

The “twist” at the end revealing that Sean knows/is working for Martin doesn’t quite land because we still know nothing about Martin. It is surprising that Sean is meeting up with the man they all just theorized was framing them, but it’s hard to decide if this is a betrayal on Sean’s part or if something else is going on.

All we’ve seen Martin do is talk to Katherine. We don’t know anything about him, so it’s impossible to get a read on him.

He could be the supreme mastermind who has hired Sean to lure all the suspects back into New York for some nefarious purpose, or he could be innocent. Suspicion needs to clue us in a bit more if we’re to feel any type of way about Martin.

Stray Thoughts
  • I see you, Tara and Sean, and I’m a fan.
  • Natalie’s “he built a farm!” moment to Sean is hilarious.
  • I love that Sean knew that absolutely none of them would listen about not seeing family.

10 British Shows You Have to Watch

Allison is in a love affair with television that doesn't seem to be letting up anytime soon. Slightly damaged fictional characters are her weakness. She loves to spend her free time curled up with a cat and a show to binge-watch. Allison is a Tomatometer-approved critic (Rotten Tomatoes).

  • Has anyone seen Arlington Road, where the protagonist is fooled into committing a terrorist attack, I wonder if they are getting fooled into incriminating themselves by going back to New York
