Legacies Review: We All Knew This Day Was Coming (Season 4 Episode 3)
Emotions run high on Legacies Season 4 Episode 3, “We All Knew This Day Was Coming,” as Hope comes to terms with her fate.
“We All Knew This Day Was Coming” does exceptionally well at juggling the different storylines at play. Kaleb takes a turn for the worst, Malivore bests Cleo, Josie puts her foot down, and two familiar faces make a return.
Hope’s transformation into tribrid status has been coming a long time, and its execution is flawless. With so many scenarios for the event, it’s pleasing to have a happier moment rather than stressful and nonconsensual.

Hope loves to venture off on her own, putting herself in harm’s way before others because that’s who she is. She doesn’t want the people closest to her to suffer, which is why she tends to stick to herself.
However, deep down, Hope is aware that she has a family at the Salvatore school who will risk anything for her, but accepting it as reality is complicated. Accepting that you don’t have to endure the hard times alone is tough when it’s all you know. But, thankfully, her family knows her well enough to beat her to the punch and throw her a going-away dinner.
The bond between Hope, Lizzie, and Josie is, hands down, one of the best things about Legacies. Their relationship growth over the past few seasons has been gradual enough to where they can comfortably call each other sisters. Hope may not be their blood, but there’s no denying her involvement in the Saltzman family.

Hope’s death scene is executed with so much care and love surrounding her; it’s breathtaking. It’s the perfect death fitting for Hope Mikaelson. Hope doesn’t deserve to have to endure more pain, which makes her death so bittersweet. Her dying on her own accord is the best outcome for the situation.
The idea of Hope having the option to choose between eternal peace and going back to her old life is an interesting dilemma. It would certainly have an entirely different feel to it if fans didn’t already know what happens.
It’s crystal clear that the first four episodes of Season 4 were meant for the backend of Season 3, hence the semi-twist before the finale. This scene would be fun to ponder over and dive into if it wasn’t already known that Hope chooses life over bliss.
Besides Hope’s journey, the dynamic switch-up between MG and Kaleb is a shocking one. Kaleb’s love for Cleo, just like Hope’s love for Landon, controls his emotions and every thought process. All he wants is to help free her, so, naturally, anyone in his way is automatically against him.

It’s expected for Kaleb to lose his mind after MG’s deception, even turning into a rivalry between the two. However, it’s a total game-changer for Kaleb to lose all sense of family and seek Malivore for his personal advantage.
All fans can hope is that Kaleb knows what he’s doing by getting involved with Malivore and has a secret plan at the ready. However, with Malivore in control of his body, I doubt that to be true.
Alyssa’s turn to the dark side was barely a shock, but Kaleb’s betrayal would shake the entire school and ruin the Super Squad.
Other Thoughts:
- Malivore is occupying more than one body at a time without an issue. But, theoretically, if he were to occupy more hosts at one time, would he begin to get weaker? I’m curious to see where this storyline goes after Season 4 Episode 4.
- Throughout the episode, Rafael and Freya’s appearances make all of the difference to the overall aesthetic and story. Freya being the one to help Hope with her transition is so beautiful because she’s one of the last genuine family members Hope has. And Rafael is the only person close enough to Landon to give accurate advice on the situation. If Landon and Hope make it out alive, they need to visit Rafael in the prison world together.
- Alaric’s speech to Hope is emotional and heartfelt, but it doesn’t change how I feel about him. His comparison of Hope and Klaus is absurd and downright despicable. He deserved to be checked by Josie harder.
- Josie standing her ground and proclaiming her worth is such a joyous moment! For far too long, Josie has made herself smaller, put other people above herself, and believed that she deserves the bad things that happen to her. It’s time that she knows her worth and demands the type of love she’s rightfully entitled to.
Favorite Quotes:
- “Someday, the unthinkable may happen to me, and no, I don’t know what I will choose in that moment. But, I need someone who will love me no matter what I choose. Because if that day comes, I want to be surrounded by people who are willing to look death in the face with me and not run. I want someone to love me enough to stay and fight, even if it is a lost cause because I’m worth that.” – Josie.
- “Landon is willing to sacrifice everything just to spare other people’s pain. And that’s something he learned from you.” – Rafael.
