A Black Lady Sketch Show, Reviews

Great debates, post-date analysis, and drama at the end of the world are just a few of life’s hilarious issues on A Black Lady Sketch Show Season 2 Episode 6, “Way to Ruin the Party, Soya!”

First things first, let us celebrate the official renewal of A Black Lady Sketch Show for Season 3! Robin Thede spoke to Variety about the good news.

“I can’t wait to push the show even further in Season 3 and to keep delivering the laugh out loud content our audience loves to see,” she said. “I see this show as a budding comedy institution, where Black women can play fully-realized, non-stereotypical characters and I am so grateful for the opportunity to continue to create that space for today’s premiere comedians.”

For its Season 2 finale, A Black Lady Sketch Show goes out on a joyous note. Obviously, every episode is fun to watch, but this makes us feel good while it’s cracking us up. It’s a celebration of Black culture.

Things are not going well at the end of the world. The group has very quickly reached its limit, but just when they finally make up, there’s a twist. Someone’s watching them like it’s The Wilds.

It’s a great cliffhanger, so I hope we get a resolution in Season 3. We know there may be another cast change, but we like having something to come back to in the midst of all the nonsense. It adds nice connective tissue for the series.

One of my favorite things about A Black Lady Sketch Show is its authenticity. Nothing is more real than the Brown Family Reunion.

It’s absolutely true that at Black family reunions, everyone’s business is discussed, and everything stops when “Poison” or “Before I Let Go” comes on. And yes, they all end with a Soul Train line and the electric slide.

These are the moments when we feel truly seen by this show. It celebrates our quirks and our community. It’s never mocking because it comes from real experience. This is the comedy we need more of on TV.

There are some debates so serious they need to be given the proper time and respect. Very high on the list is Denzel Washington’s greatest performance that should’ve won an Oscar.

There is a correct answer, and it’s actually all of them. Denzel can win an Oscar every single time he’s on screen.

As fun as this high school debate is, we really want to see the sugar vs salt on grits debate. That question has plagued families for decades.

These little touches are what give the show its unique flavor. Sometimes it’s the quick throw-away lines that send us into spit takes more than the shenanigans happening in the sketch.

In a case of life imitating art, sports media’s relationship with athletes has been in the news recently, and the episode features a sketch about a post date presser.

The bit is full of clever double entendres, taking on a special meaning after athletes have questioned the importance of post game press conferences.

I realize the show was in production months earlier, but this is another example of how smart and relevant the series is, that it ended up being so timely. We normally only get this with daily or weekly comedy shows.

I admit I was worried A Black Lady Sketch Show would hit a sophomore slump after being gone so long and dealing with production during Covid-19.

However, the exact opposite is true. The series came back even stronger in Season 2, leaving us extremely excited and hopeful for Season 3.
