Angela Bassett, Courtney B. Vance Developing Series Based on Tulsa Race Massacre

As the world marks 100 years since the Tulsa Race Massacre, Angela Bassett and Courtney B. Vance are using their production company to tell a long overdue story.

Variety reports the couple’s Bassett Vance Productions is developing a series based on the tragedy with MTV Entertainment Studios.

The massacre has gained attention in recent years due to portrayals on HBO’s Watchmen and Lovecraft Country.

“Angela and I have always had a deep appreciation for history, especially when it comes to stories that are rooted in the Black community,” Vance told Variety. “We look forward to working on this series with MTV Entertainment Studios that will explore an important slice of American history as we look to reflect on events that changed the lives of countless Black families in Tulsa, Oklahoma one hundred years ago.”

“We are excited to work with Nathan because his vision directly aligns with the story that Angela and I want to tell,” he continued. “Although the series will revisit the Black pain and tragedy that took place on May 31 and June 1, 1921, it will also importantly introduce to many the stories of the extraordinary, entrepreneurial people who built Black Wall Street and all that this community accomplished.”

All American: Homecoming follows a young tennis hopeful from Beverly Hills and an elite baseball player from Chicago as they contend with the high stakes of college sports, while also navigating the highs, lows and sexiness of unsupervised early adulthood at a prestigious Historically Black College.”

Starring All American’s Geffri Maya as Simone, audiences can get their first look at the series during the Monday, July 5 episode of All American.

The network passed on Black Lightning spinoff Painkiller and drama Our Ladies of Brooklyn. Nancy Drew spinoff Tom Swift is still in contention, while Powerpuff, based on The Powerpuff Girls, is being reworked with its four leads still involved.
