A Black Lady Sketch Show, Reviews

Familiar favorites return in unexpected ways on A Black Lady Sketch Show Season 2 Episode 3, “Sister, May I Call You Oshun?”

The fantastic thing about A Black Lady Sketch Show is you need to watch every moment from start to finish. It is the only comedy on television that is non-stop funny for the entire 30 minutes.

From Dr. Hadassah’s “Black Table Talk” to the bloopers during the final credits, there is not one moment where something hilarious isn’t happening. It’s also never going to be the same old thing every week.

Shade throwing between Mary Magdalene and other women disciples isn’t something we knew we needed, but now we want to see what else happens in this untold Bible story.

Fresh off the announcement of his Grey’s Anatomy exit, Jesse Williams stretches his comedy muscles as a man with a “kink” kink. Meaning he likes Black women when their hair is growing out.

The acrobatics Laci Mosley pulls off to avoid showing how her hair really looks is somehow over the top and completely understandable at the same time.

Black women fighting with their hair has been the subject of many jokes and sketches, but the way it’s handled here doesn’t feel mocking or offensive, and it makes all the difference.

Perhaps the show’s most annoying character, and we mean that in a fun way, returns when Chris’ sister throws the silliest gender reveal party on record. She and her Instagram-obsessed friend have a pink and a blue monster fight, and the winner is what she’ll be having.

When it’s time to end the conversation, Chris once again says everything but what he’s supposed to say, and it gets him slapped by his father.

As crazy as Chris is, Robin Thede never disappoints with her commitment to giving us responses that have nothing to do with the scene. This time we got Nova Scotia, North Pole, and the Luther Vandross classic “Never Too Much,” a choice that broke guest star Richard T. Jones in outtakes.

At the post-apocalypse warehouse, things are getting tense between the ladies as Robin becomes more suspicious of Skye’s familiarity with a random secret government warehouse.

Breaking up the wild skits with an ongoing storyline is so smart because it gives us something to look forward to alongside the show’s ever-present unpredictability.

So about Dr. Hadassah.

She’s so hilariously ridiculous that we can totally see this as a real YouTube show. It’s clear both Thede and guest star Gabrielle Union are having way too much fun as Hadassah grills Union about being a working wife who can read.

The fall off the couch laughing moment comes when she introduces cardboard Dwyane Wade to ask him how he feels.

There’s no deep analysis of this required. Simply put, it’s next-level insanity that we can’t get enough of. Just when we think we can pull ourselves together, the credits start rolling and we find out who’s responsible for speech permission and who provided the vibranium. Obviously, it’s Shuri.

Sketch comedy isn’t new. At this point, it’s very hard to bring something different to the genre. However, four snarky female disciples sitting in the back during the last supper is comedic brilliance that audiences will only get from A Black Lady Sketch Show.
