Wynonna Earp Review: Better Dig Two (Season 4 Episode 11)

Reviews, Wynonna Earp

Wynonna Earp Season 4 Episode 11, “Better Dig Two,” is a mess, and not completely in the way we’ve come to know and love. Technically, there’s one storyline that’s a mess, and then one that is wonderful.

Let’s discuss the mess first, shall we? The Clanton storyline has rarely worked, and it really doesn’t in this episode. The Clantons are probably something that should’ve just never entered the present-day world of Wynonna Earp.

If you can make anyone Clanton heir, why hasn’t someone else done that before? Cleo can’t have been the only Clanton who hated the ghost river triangle or the “perks” of being the heir.

She says herself that Mam didn’t teach her practically anything about being the heir, and yet she knew how to make someone else heir, so it can’t have been a hard spell.

Then there’s the whole weirdness of Doc’s behavior when he’s the heir, which doesn’t match up with what we’ve seen from Cleo as heir. She seemed like herself (as well as we knew her), and she certainly wasn’t crazed like Doc was as heir. There are just so many unanswered questions about the heir situation, and we have to take a lot of it on faith.

The only good things to come out of it is that we’re done with the Clantons and Angel!Waverly saves Doc’s life and makes him human. Now he and Wynonna are back to being lovable dorks.

Speaking of Angel!Waverly, Dominique Provost-Chalkley does an absolutely phenomenal job as the scion of Julian. Her delivery, posture, mannerisms, everything is fantastic. The random smoking scene could have been left out, but other than that, Provost-Chalkley crushes it. She is one of my favorite parts of the hour.

Mercedes: Vamp permission granted. Now get over here and suck me off, already!

One thing this season has done exceptionally well is Nicole’s arc.

We’ve seen how staying behind when Wynonna went to save Waverly in the garden has affected her. We watched her cope with the trauma of being left to becoming more assertive in the battles recently in Purgatory.

Wynonna Earp has consistently focused on Nicole and where she’s at in her journey. Nothing comes out of nowhere with her storyline, and nothing has been rushed.

Standing up to Angel!Waverly and fighting to keep the love of her life on this plane of existence makes sense as the next progression in Nicole’s journey. Yes, the risks are huge, and Nicole isn’t totally sure what she is signing herself up for, but she’s proven that she will do whatever it takes to keep Waverly by her side.

Wynonna wields the angel’s sword and is the champion. Nicole is now the angel’s shield. It’s extremely fitting, and I can think of no one more equipped to protect the ghost river triangle than those two, potentially along with Jeremy leading BBD — assuming he doesn’t kick the agency out permanently.

“Better Dig Two” also offers a couple of hints as to what the future of Purgatory may be, and it’s appreciated. With the series finale, Wynonna Earp Season 4 Episode 12, “Old Souls,” coming up next, it’s a relief to start getting a bit of a picture as to what will happen to Purgatory once we say goodbye to this wonderful show.

Of course, the finale may come in and change a lot of things, but I don’t think it will. Purgatory being an inclusive space for both humans and supernaturals is fitting for a show that’s always been about acceptance and equality, on and off the screen.

The only obstacle in the way is Wynonna and her recent tendency to go on drunken, demon-killing sprees. Hopefully, her and Doc really get some time to talk during the finale and work out the issues that have been plaguing Wynonna.

After the intervention on Wynonna Earp Season 4 Episode 10, “Life Turned Her That Way,” we need to see that discussion with Wynonna, and take the time to not rush the mechanics behind her transition of going from feeling like her family is constantly under attack (and therefore validating her kill-first policy) to accepting this new way of the world.

Stray Thoughts
  • Billy and Nedley are a fun combination.
  • Of course, Mercedes is now a vampire. I love it.
  • Jeremy is an absolute badass at the end.
  • Billy convincing Wynonna to save Rachel is fantastic and a great reminder as to how Wynonna should use her powers as champion.
  • The fact that Waverly’s book FINALLY came into play is a relief. It took long enough.
