Wynonna Earp Review: Life Turned Her That Way (Season 4 Episode 10)
There is a lot going on during Wynonna Earp Season 4 Episode 10, “Life Turned Her That Way,” so much so that it feels like it can’t have been the length of a normal episode.
Waverly’s transformation into a black and white angel is beyond exciting, and it sets up an interesting storyline heading into the final episodes. While it’s unclear what exactly she’s going to do, I can’t wait to see her do it. This combined with the Noah protocol being enacted in BBD means that Purgatory is in for a rough time.
Better pacing of the big mysteries is definitely something Wynonna Earp can improve on. Waverly’s angelic powers appear whenever it is useful, and then they are pushed aside and almost forgotten about, waiting for the next chance to re-emerge.

It would have been nice if there was more of a focus on the garden and Waverly this season, perhaps running tandem to this new world in Purgatory. We could have maybe seen more of Waverly trying to figure out the limits of her angelic powers or more of how they work.
In the garden, all she had to do was sit on a throne, which doesn’t exactly require any angelic powers. And yet, on “Life Turned Her That Way,” she completely transforms and goes full (half?) angel.
It would have been nice to have a bit more of a lead into this rather than it happening so suddenly. Something as simple as Waverly’s book appearing in an episode before this would have helped. Doc and Waverly could have met prior to this moment to theorize about the book.
Don’t get me wrong, Waverly’s transformation happening after being tortured for an entire afternoon (or however long) makes complete sense.

I only wish we had more of a focus on Waverly, the garden, angelic powers, etc. before this. The long hiatus between this episode and the first half of the season could be to blame for this as well. Perhaps if we got all of Season 4 in a normal weekly rollout, it would have worked better.
Also, we have to talk about how weird it is that we’re just supposed to accept that Jolene’s back.
Aside from the “she’s dead” fact, Jolene seems to know a lot about what’s going on in Purgatory for someone who is trapped in a cabin that’s surrounded by memory-wiping fog, unless she captures people lost in the fog and grills them for information (doubtful).
Waverly: Your journey is over, Wynonna Earp. Mine has just begun.
There has to be something else going on with Jolene because everything seems so implausible. My theory is that Jolene is actually Eve. I’m not sure that it answers all the questions surrounding Jolene, but it’s my theory. Do you have one?
My favorite part of the hour is Wynonna and Nicole arguing over who gets to rescue Waverly. Nicole gets to get off the sidelines and prove she can take protect Waverly too, and then Wynonna has to experience what it is like to be in Nicole’s shoes, putting your loved one’s fate in someone else’s hands.
We’re so used to Wynonna risking her life to save the day, and she probably is too. Sitting around waiting for someone else to do it is foreign to her. It’s devastating to sit with Wynonna as she desperately radios for status updates. You can see the panic and fear on her face, and Melanie Scrofano does a superb job in those moments.

Stray Thoughts
- I love seeing how Wynonna’s really struggling, and the intervention is so heartbreaking and amazing.
- Wynonna made the right decision by saving Cleo instead of Doc or Jeremy.
- Rachel is a great example of how you can be a caring person to demons and still want to save the day.
- Wynonna can definitely learn a thing or two from her.
- Mercedes!!!!
