Lodge 49 Review: DisOrientation (Season 2 Episode 3)

Lodge 49, Reviews

Everything is connected, as Ernie himself says on Lodge 49 Season 1 Episode 3, “DisOrientation.”

It’s an episode of revelation and delusion, where proclamations and wild goose chases leave some looking nutty and others disillusioned with their life choices. There’s even two deaths, a sign of life running out that does not help matters when life choices are being questioned.

Ernie’s trip to Mexico ends up being a dud, but the bigger question of the scrolls becomes a recurring theme. There’s a larger game at play with the scrolls, with Daphne after them, their theft from Mexico at the beginning, and a subtle hint of Paul Giamatti’s author character (who appeared on Lodge 49 Season 2 Episode 1, “All Circles Vanish,” briefly) going to specific lodge towns during his book tour.

It’s hard to take Daphne’s word for now, now that she’s revealed her true intentions, since she’s in league with Avery from the first season, who turned out to be quite the maniac. But Dud’s onboard, so it’s looking like it’s full steam ahead. The scrolls holding the formula to bitcoin creation does sound pretty handy, though, so it’s hard not to jump in.

The lodge’s hard times and low morale make it into more of a place to mope now. Scott and Jocelyn’s bonding time is a nice addition to the season, though Jocelyn does find a hard time making headway with Scott’s ideas that are making things worse. But at least they are growing closer, and are making a fun little odd couple team-up.

Liz going to Higher Steaks (easily one of the best television restaurant names in quite a while) is another step of complacency, especially when her old boss is now her new one (at least, in the beginning). She’s side-stepping with her career rather than elevating herself, though at least it’s an upscale restaurant.

It’s what makes the visit with her father’s friend, searching for meaning, that much more meaningful. She’s placed her father on a pedestal, especially with how he’s disappeared from her life, and now that she’s realizing there had been an affair in the past, that image is starting to crumble a little. He’s human, and it’s another journey for her in discovering herself and that everyone is flawed in their own way.

But the woman also has a temper when things don’t go her way, so there’s still some caution to be taken. One of the highlights of that blow-up scene is Dud diving in front of the thrown dip as though he’s taking a bullet for Liz. It’s both a halfhearted half-jump and a genuine instinct to protect her from the food, that it’s vintage Dud.

Quote of the episode goes to Brian Doyle-Murray’s Bob:

You were Speedy in name, but not in fact… the cheapest of ironies.

Lodge 49 Season 2 Episode 3, “DisOrientation,” is a fun romp into seeking out answers when the world may not be ready to give you all the pieces yet. Connie’s beautiful words of not wanting to be alone connects up to where everyone’s headspace is at on this episode, and it’s wise words all should follow.

The True Lodge may be nearer for us to discover, but the search and the journey are half the battle. It’s been a fun battle so far, and the longing for a place of belonging is one these characters hold close.

Some stray thoughts on the episode:

  • The return of Vik Sahay and his motivational and psychological job training is a fun one. Human chess to determine the mental fortitude of its workers is certainly a step up.
  • Ernie and El Confidente finding the dead body brings another return: the donkey with a unicorn horn, which is going to be a recurring image by the looks of it.
