The Good Place: D’Arcy Carden and Ted Danson Discuss Their Most Emotional Scenes [Video]
When the shocking news dropped that The Good Place would be ending after four seasons, many fans came to the realization that we were, in fact, living in the bad place.
The series, which centers around a group of delinquents who find themselves fighting to prove they can be better people in the afterlife, has been praised by fans and critics alike for its witty yet philosophical take on life after death.
But the show’s afterworld wouldn’t be complete without resident demon architect Michael, played by Ted Danson, and his all-knowing assistant Janet, played by D’Arcy Carden.
This past week at San Diego Comic-Con, I had the chance to chat with the on-screen duo during a roundtable interview about The Good Place, their most emotional scenes to film, and what they love most about attending these kinds of fan conventions.

While Janet doesn’t have the ability to portray actual emotion, D’Arcy Carden admits there have been times over the years where she couldn’t help tearing up during her scenes.
“I mean the writing is so good that sometimes you don’t even mean to be emotional. I can think of three different scenes where the point was not at all to produce tears and in fact, Janet probably shouldn’t.”
Carden recalled a particularly emotional scene from The Good Place Season 3 Episode 9 “Janet(s),” an episode in which the actress received mass praise for her ability to portray Janet versions of her fellow castmates with incredible accuracy.“I was, as Chidi, talking to Eleanor and trying to get her to remember herself. I kept crying and I look back to see both the writers are crying. The words were just so special,” she explained.
As for Ted Danson, there is a prominent scene between Michael and Janet that he remembers being particularly emotional.
“The episode where we declared our friendship, that was very sweet,” he said to Carden’s audible delight.

Because he’s a Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning actor, Danson’s appearances at conventions are somewhat of a surreal experience for attendees. While the thought of coming was initially daunting for Danson, he was quickly blown away by the fans that came out to support the show.
“Well, I wanted to dismiss it before I got here as something I would never really want to do,” Danson admitted at first.
“We’re not mingling with every astounding costume and a bizarre little hat, but we are meeting 1800 fans in a room that have actually watched all the shows, loved it and were there to tell the cast and the writers that we listened, we paid attention, and we appreciate it. That is incredibly moving.”
