Killjoys Review: Blame it on The Rain (Season 5 Episode 2)
On Killjoys Season 5 Episode 2, “Blame it on the Rain,” the team is back together, and all is right with the world. Well, not really, but it’s a huge relief that D’av and Johnny remember now.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun watching Johnny and D’av team up sans memory. They are an entertaining duo no matter whether they remember who they are or not. However, it’s time that our D’av and Johnny returned to us.
Unfortunately, it’s a bittersweet victory. Dutch gets Johnny and D’av back, but she loses Zeph.

It was only a matter of time before Zeph got wiped. She really should know better to never go outside without her raincoat protecting her, but an argument can be made that it slips her mind because she’s so concerned about the team’s safety.
It’s predictable, but it does throw a wrench in Dutch’s plan. Her girl on the outside can’t help them now that they’re captured, and while Johnny’s the original team nerd, it will take him a minute to jump into what Zeph had been working on, and the team doesn’t have a lot of minutes to waste.
Losing Zeph definitely sets the team back a bit in terms of their overall plan to permanently stop The Lady’s hold on Old Town. It’ll be interesting to see how Zeph remembers and what she gets up to now that she’s wiped again.
Please don’t make me watch Zeph remember Pip again; the first time is heartbreaking enough.
D’av: Hey shitbird! Remember the part where you broke into my ship and tried to shoot me?
Johnny: I didn’t remember that you were my brother. Doesn’t count.
D’av: I miss fake Johnny.
Johnny: I miss you too, asshole.
The memory wiping/replacing aspect of the rain is still a little confusing.
We’ve seen it plant new memories, as was the case at the end of Killjoys Season 5 Episode 1, “Run, Yala, Run,” when D’av and Pree “remembered” that there’s a warrant out for Dutch. This time with Zeph, it’s like it resets her back to before she was even suspicious of what’s going on in Old Town. There’s no indication that a new memory is implanted.
So, it appears as if The Lady rewires their brains as they are in the rain, which would be an instant process. There’s no delay, and we haven’t seen The Lady actively monitoring Old Town, so how does she know when someone steps into the rain or a decon shower and what memories to give/take away?

Hopefully, in addition to getting some answers on The Lady’s magical memory wiping/replacing skills, we won’t have to endure anyone else forgetting after this. It’s a setback that is about to start growing old. The fight needs to progress onto a new battle.
Well, one of my questions from “Run, Yala, Run,” is answered! D’av refers to Lucy as “ship,” and in return, Lucy bends the truth every now and then, being completely truthful when it suits her.
This is such a small moment, but it’s a great, funny insight into what life must be like for Lucy, dealing with a D’av who doesn’t remember her. I can’t wait for her reaction when she learns D’av and Johnny have their memories back.

Killjoys does a great job of giving us these character moments.
It’s a testament to the show that it knows when to give the characters a chance to shine. Watching D’av and Lucy interact doesn’t move the plot along in any way, but not every moment needs to do so; character moments are equally, if not more, important than plot points.
Another answer we get during the hour is how and why Khlyen is back — The Lady (somehow) pulled him out of the green because she needs help finding Jaq. As to how Khlyen can help, no one knows, but hey, it’s an answer we didn’t have before.

Of course, with one answer comes a million more questions, specifically what does Khlyen mean when he tells The Lady that Dutch “will know it’s not me.”
How is he Khlyen but not Khlyen? Okay, that got a little philosophical, but you get my point. Any theories?
Seeing as how the green shattered right after her, maybe the Khlyen on The Lady’s ship isn’t the Khlyen Dutch and Aneela were with in the green. The Lady could have, somehow, reconstructed Khlyen based on her own memories and what she picked up from Aneela and Dutch’s minds.
Pree: They’re calling her “The Widow.”
Johnny: Well that’s just poor research. I’m standing right here.
Do you think it’s possible that The Lady re-built Khlyen? We don’t really know the limits or extent of her power, so it’s hard to completely rule anything out. She transfers bodies by biting people, so who is to say what she can and cannot do. What are your Khlyen theories?
Speaking of The Lady, it’s exciting to finally get some answers and insight into her. She’s been lurking in the background for a while, and now we get to see her out and about and taking over people’s bodies.
Thankfully, the creepy spiders have not made another appearance. I think I much prefer her weird alien offspring that she’s keeping on Old Town over the spiders. So far, the species (that Dutch kills, R.I.P.) have not nestled themselves inside of anyone’s brains, which is a relief.
