Killjoys Review: Run, Yala, Run (Season 5 Episode 1)
It’s the final season, and Killjoys Season 5 Episode 1, “Run, Yala, Run,” doesn’t waste any time getting the momentum going.
By the end of the hour, your heart is racing, and you’re on the edge of your seat. Now that, ladies and gentleman, is how you do a season premiere. Is everyone else amped up for the rest of the season?
Killjoys knows how long to spend letting everyone live their new, strange lives, given to them by The Lady, and it knows when it’s time to wake Dutch up. Nothing drags on. The pace is perfect.

The focus isn’t on what The Lady is up to (although that is a genuine concern), but instead “Run, Yala, Run,” is all about where everyone ended up and watching Dutch wake up from the spell The Lady put her, and everyone else, under.
It’s a fun hour that lets you forget about the looming threat for a bit.
Everyone may be different versions of themselves, but there’s still an ounce of truth to them. The Lady didn’t, and probably, couldn’t completely alter everyone.

Pree and Gared are still in love. Zeph is still paying attention and solving things no one else is aware of. Dutch and D’av are still drawn to each other, and Dutch and Johnny’s sass is still going strong.
And then there’s there are the Jaqobis.
D’av and Johnny are still bickering children. Nothing can ever change that, not even The Lady. They may not know they are brothers right now, but their banter is still ever present.
D’av: Did you just try to shoot me?!
Johnny: I guess your gun’s shitty, just like you are.
D’av: That’s because the safety is on, genius.
Johnny: Thanks, butthole.
There’s a different edge to their sarcasm — it’s banter between strangers and twinged with a bit of jealousy, but it still has all the classic marks of some top quality Jaqobis banter.
We were SO CLOSE to having Johnny, D’av, and Pree wake up and remember the truth.
Dutch picks the perfect memories to jar each of them awake, proving that she knows exactly how to get through to each of them.
Watching everyone remember is emotional, and the momentum starts to build because the team’s back, and we’re about to go kick some ass. But, it doesn’t happen, which is actually better.

If Dutch managed to wake up her entire team not even 24 hours after waking up herself, then The Lady wouldn’t exactly be the big bad threat that we know she is. It would have been too easy.
So, for now, it’s back to Dutch and Zeph vs. the world, and I’m okay with that. It’s exciting seeing Dutch and Zeph being the only ones aware of what’s going on (well, aside from Delle Seyah and Jaq, but you get my point).
Dutch and Zeph’s friendship is always entertaining, and this time around we basically get to watch Zeph become friends with Dutch all over again.
Dutch: I know the real Zeph, and she is a mad genius and a friend. And whatever part of her is left in you, I need.
Hopefully, Killjoys Season 5 Episode 2, “Blame it on the Rain,” will feature at least one more person waking up, if not multiple people. Who would you like to see remember next?
I’ve never been so happy in my entire life to see Khlyen alive and well. There may have been cheering.
His presence explains who would know to send Dutch a red box to yank her out from under The Lady’s grasp. Of course, there’s still the matter of how he got it to Dutch.
However, he wouldn’t be Khlyen if there wasn’t an air of mystery around him and anything he might be involved in.

It wouldn’t be crazy to think that Khlyen was preparing for The Lady’s escape and knew what she would do upon her escape and had already developed a contingency plan. This is Khlyen we’re talking about, after all. The man is twelve steps ahead of everyone.
However, this assumes Khlyen and Aneela exited the green before it collapsed and not that The Lady somehow brought Khlyen out of the green herself.
If The Lady is responsible for Khlyen being back in the real world, it’s unclear why she would bring him back. As far as we know, she’s winning and doesn’t need any help. The Lady doesn’t seem like the kind to somehow bring someone out of the green to keep someone prisoner for gloating purposes.

She has Old Town and her biggest threads (Dutch, Johnny, and D’av) under her spell. Jaq and Delle Seyah are the only threats to her operation, but it’s not like Khlyen has inside information that would somehow help The Lady locate them.
He may be Jaq’s grandfather, but it’s not like he knows everything that Jaq could be up to.
If The Lady brought Khlyen back, then the next question is how. The green was destroyed at the end of Killjoys Season 4 Episode 10, “Sporemageddon,” and so this would either mean that she’s somehow recreated the green or recreated Khleyn. Okay, my brain hurts.
Delle Seyah: Casual warning — If I die, you’re grounded.
What are your theories on how Khlyen is back? Do you think he’s responsible for the red box, and if not, who is? Aneela?
Stray Thoughts
- I’m so here for Delle Seyah and Jaq’s badass duo. Please tell me we spend the majority of an episode with them. I need it.
- Jaq’s brief conversation with D’av is a punch straight to the heart.
- It took me a minute to recognize Pree. I miss the sparkle.
- So does D’av know about Lucy or has Lucy being hiding from him?
