Shadowhunters Review: The Beast Within (Season 3 Episode 18)
Clary ventures to the dark side when an experiment on Jonathan goes wrong, Simon’s sister comes for a visit, and Alec must do something tragic in the hopes that it’ll be the best for Magnus on Shadowhunters Season 3 Episode 18, “The Beast Within.”
It’s been a long while since Simon has been genuinely happy and it’s time for that to change, which is why Becky is visiting to check in on him. Simon’s family used to be an essential part of his life, but now he never gets to see them anymore after his mom took him being a vampire horribly.
It’s adorable how open and excited Becky is about the supernatural world and how unafraid she is to be at the bar around all types of supernatural beings. Even when almost attacked outside the bar by a demon, she still holds her composure very well.

Her love for Simon is, and it’s evident that she thinks about him often, now that she can’t be close enough to check on him all the time. If she didn’t need to be with their mother, I think that Becky would want to involve herself in the supernatural world way more and would probably end up being a minor part of the team.
Becky’s been around Simon and Izzy for a total of five minutes and can already see the connection that the two of them have. I’ve been waiting for Izzy and Simon to test the waters between each other ever since his death in the fairy realm and being brought back by her.
Simon is the typical guy who can’t see how adorable he is and thinks that he’s not good enough for the girl, but it’s shocking how he hasn’t seen the faces Izzy has given him before. I hope that both of them don’t ignore the fact that they almost kiss, but instead confront it head on because they’ve clearly got some feelings for each other.

Speaking of feelings, Alec standing up and doing what he feels is right for Magnus, even when he knows it’s going to be one of the hardest things of his life, is gut-wrenching. His love for Magnus is so pure that he willingly contacts the prince of hell to try to get Magnus his powers back, and follows through with the horrific stipulation.
Asmodeus is conniving and knows how to twist things to get what he wants, which is what I think making Alec breakup with Magnus is. Because Alec uses a medium to contact Asmodeus, he’s now used her to escape his imprisonment and walk on earth, all to see Magnus.
I think that Asmodeus is using Alec to make Magnus vulnerable so that he can try to take advantage of him easily. With Alec gone Magnus has nothing left in his life that he genuinely cares for, and now Asmodeus will show up with the offer to give him his magic and immortality back.

Magnus can’t live his life without magic, but not having Alec is going to be an even tougher blow to deal with. I hope that Magnus gets his powers back and then confronts Alec on what happened between them, getting the truth out of him so they can fight Asmodeus together.
With this being the last season I hope that we don’t see Magnus and Alec end up against one another.
The rune that bonds Clary and Jonathan is something that has been giving Clary conflicting thoughts about who she should be following, and after being hit in the head, she’s finally able to make her choice.
When injecting Jonathan with the heavenly fire, Clary probably should’ve been given some as well in the rune because it feels like they subdued the demon in Jonathan and brought it out in Clary.
